Help w/ tuning for emissions testing...check my maps plz
 

Im in ohio, and I have to take my car to e-check. They sniffer test the ---- and visually check for a cat. I have a brand new cat on it (for testing only, i usually have a strait pipe in there) and they do an idle test and a 2500 rpm no load test. I failed the 2500 rpm test barely, but the idle I failed miserably. Heres the numbers and limits:

@2500rpm
*HC 257.6 ppm, limit 220 ppm
CO 0.23%, limit 1.2%

@idle
*HC 698.4 ppm, limit 220 ppm
CO 0.08%, limit 1.2%


I failed the hydrocarbons, which is leading me to believe that i almost have a lean misfire condition, and with the low CO numbers that kinda makes sense to me atleast, correct me if im wrong. I cant figure out why my idle is so much worse than the 2500 rpm though? Is it all in the tune? It has pretty much a stock rebuilt motor w/ less than 5k miles, its just recently been turboed, and tuned by myself (first time for both) and my afrs are decent, it pulls nice at 5psi and no dips in power, and the plugs are fresh since the turbo. I do have a problem with the idle, sometimes it runs rich and sometimes it runs lean, kinda like whatever it wants to do. It will fluctuate from 11-12 somes to 16-17 somes. WTF is that about, tune also? It has 460cc RX7 injectors, 255lph (stock pressure) pump, stock regulator w/ vac line hooked up, 14b/hf combo, homemade 2.5" downpipe/ 2.25" exhaust, new cat, chipped & converted to obd1 p28, tuned myself with crome pro/plx wideband (but datalogging only works when it wants to)...I dunno whatelse could really make a difference in it passing emissions. I can post pics of my fuel maps if needed.

Anyone help, I need this fucker to pass so i can get my plates/tags renewed lol. Im almost to the point that I feel like taking pics of my first setup so you guys can laugh at it, although ive seen worse :S

Keep the timing as close to stock at those two points as possible and get the O2 sensor to read 14.3 - 14.7

They dont test for NOx in Ohio?

BTW, the only way to really test is via 5 gas analyzer, wideband can only tell you so much.

No NOx. My shop just bought a new scanner (the snapon modis if anyone is in the field) and they are debating wether or not to buy the gas analyzer for it. The owners are stingy, so probably wont get one, but then id have no problems hehe. The timing is stock untill its in the boost, so i dont see that, plus since its a no load test, it doesnt build any boost. The afrs I had made for my 'emissions chip' were kinda lean-ish (i was shooting for around 15.5s anything more than 8-10" vac, then back to my original chips map from 8-6" to +6psi) so i would have an easier time passing, but i guess that didnt work out so well. Any reason as to why my idle changes the afrs by itself? the O2s disabled and unhooked, I have my wideband signal being input so i can log it, but other than that its stuck in open loop as far as i know. I will post pics of my fuel maps tomarrow and hopefully theres something there that will stick out to someone as a problem. Thanks for the input, keep it coming.

this is the last year sadly. otherwise id be set. :7

heres the low cam maps, i put the high cam in too, but during testing it will only be in low cam (idle & no load 2500rpm). See if theres something worng with my maps...

Running with a small amount of gas and a lot of "heet" added helps a lot of people in reducing hc and co.

And yes you're right, typically accumulation of co is due to a rich condition.

Anyone else? anymore info on emissions? What about on why my idle afrs fluctuate? does it dump more fuel when its colder?

Make sure you're running the lowest octane possible for emissions purposes.

I would think that if you were getting a slightly lean misfire, that probably wouldn't be as prominent an issue with a lower octane fuel (cause it burns more readily)


And on the plugs, you say they're fresh yes, but it'd be wise to check them anyways, one or more could've been fouled during tuning. You never know, and it's easy enough to check. ;)

And make sure the cat is REALLY warm before you test. I've seen that make a passing difference more than once.

No NOx :o, LUCKY BASTARD.

Just disable the O2 sensor, lean the crap out it, and advance the timing.

Your map is a little on the rich side, except the first column. You should add a little fuel there, maybe in the 20's
