Yes that will work but you will need to follow the POP PORT pin out to find the right wires. I did it and it works fine. www.pinouts.ru

The colors don't have to match. Its the wire position that is important. The ground is the only wire you need.

i tried figureing out which wires to use by using a multimeter with a pinout of a usb port, but i got a connection with every pin on the usb end and every wire. some showed more resistance than others but there was no real pattern to it

Drivers may be your problem. A lot of people have had problems there. I have ones that I have made from radio-shack and one I found locally that Xenocron made. Both have worked well for me.

"One way to test is to run Hyperterminal on your PC, chose the Comm port that your DKU5 driver SW sets and then type something on the keyboard. You should see nothing on the screen. Then connect the Red & Blue wire together, and try typing some more. If it is setup correctly you should see some characters appear on the screen. If they don't, then either the DKU5 driver is not installed properly, or is setting up the DKU5 to be a different Comm port, or the wires are different colours in your DKU5 cable."
