First turbo project some advice needed

Hey guys,
I'm hoping to start my first turbo project in the next week or so I want to boost my Suzuki samurai with a 1.6 16v vitara motor in it. I use it for offroad competition s here in Ireland and as speed events are getting more popular here I need more power, I've been wanting to turbo something for ages and I firgure at least if I blow this up I don't depend on it for transport ;D.

I've been researching for ages and I've no problem making the manifold I have my own own TIG and fab gear but I've never played with ecus or mapping before and above all I just want this to be a reliable set up low boost 6 to 8 psi at the most,

Here's were it gets interesting for me I've read a write up on one of the off road Suzuki forums about a guy that boosted his and just used a rising rate pressure reg and has been running like this for a while no probs from reading on here it seems that FMUs are disliked obhiously stand alone is the best option or even a piggyback AFC but is this nesscary for a low boost set up will a FMU suffice and just keep an eye on it with a wideband keeping in mind this thing gets driven once a month if that. I would be very interested to hear peoples opinions on this

An FMU can be adequate for low boost fuel. What are you doing for timing?

Being doing some more research and theres a guy on zukikrawlers board who says he has been running a turbo at 8psi on his completely stock engine (stock everything computer injectors etc no piggy back no fmu) he retarted the base timing form 8 to 5 degrees and has been running like this for 2 years with a on boost AFR of 15:1.

I have ordered a turbo manifold flange to start fabricating my manifold. i will order an fmu and wide band and see how i go for now with the base timing drop and 98 octane
