I swapped chips for months too, finally sprang for the ostrich. Thought about an extension too. Depending on the length you might need a Moates socket booster. I had to use one with my Ostrich, wouldn't work without it.

Here's a pic of mine with the socket booster and the Ostrich ribbon cable. You should be able to use the same type of ribbon cable with just another ZIF on the other end. If you keep it short, like maybe 10" or less you may not need a booster.

actually its a 2 timer i use one of those to switch between burnout map and race map and since they are really close i can swith it while the car is at an idle

The board in the photo above isn't a 2 timer, it's a socket booster. I have a 2 timer as well but don't use it. Actually the 2 timer is simple to simulate and I hardwire a 2 way switcher into all the Q45 ECU's I mod for people. Here's a pic of my "HMT" 2 timer...

what is the pot sticking out of the ecu for? some sort of voltage adj on a particular sensor input?

It's used to activate the self diagnostic mode of the ECU, checks engine codes.

wow tricky stuff there. i think every ecu should be like obd0 hondas and have a led on the board that will just always flash out codes to you
