Default EGT gauge - how many of you are using one

Just wondering how many of you our there are using an EGT gauge?

I've got the AF gauge hooked up to the o2 wire (which sucks for reading) and was curious how many of you are using the EGT? Also, where did you put the probe (s)?

Does no EGT and no Wideband o2 sensor = shitting tuning? or are there other ways to tune?

Thx
Curtis

the 02 reading is better than tuning blindfolded. The EGT probe goes in the #1 runner (#1 cylinder runs the hottest) about 4"-6" from the block. Read the FAQ in the general section to see that even EGT's are not the best to tune by and don't really tell you whats going on. Best way to tune is on a dyno with a wideband and about an hour of time. late

I was always told the number 3 cylinder runs the hottest.

Mine is about 3 inches after the turbo on the downpipe. I really don't tune with it. I just lake sure it is within a safe temperature. If my timing is off it will let me know.

Just out of curiosity does it matter where you put the EGT probe? And what kind of temperatures do you expect from a stock ZC running stock timming and 95 gas?

Chaeers.

"Stock" as in not boosted? I dunno I have never seen an EGT guage on a N/A car. It is pretty important as to where you put it. For example if you have it where mine is(3 inches after the dp) your temperatures will be lower than someone who has it on a runner on the manifold. From what I know on the DP the temps can get to about 1500 before you need to let off the gas. When I am cruising I am at about 1000 degrees F. I haven't been over 1300 yet. I'm not that brave. :P

i've read a bit about this and i've been finding that a lot of the RX-7 guys have had decent success tuning with the stock O2 sensor and EGT's. basically, at least in the case of the mazda, the O2 sensor output is pretty repeatable, so what they do is get someone whose car is tuned with a WBO2 and get the O2 voltages and the EGT's those voltages occurred at to use as a tuning template. the O2 voltage will drop slightly as EGT goes up, but the EGT can be used as a reference as to what the O2 voltages mean.

better than not tuning at all...

Fair enough answers, sounds like getting an EGT gauge/probe is simply a good idea...if not for tuning for prevention of meltdown .

So which is it, 1st or 3rd cylinder? I'd rather tap into the exh man now while it's not yet installed for that extra accuracy.

TIA

3rd runner, the distance from the flange equals the radius of the runner. ie 1.5" diameter runner = .75" from the flange.
