egt?

Ok I have done my research put it in #3 2 inches from the head. #3 runs the hottest bla bla...........

My questions are what company did you get your egt from? Did it help you tune ignition? Is there a good band clamp egt or is in pipe the only way to go?

Re: egt?

I always thought listening for detonation was a better way to tune timing.

Re: egt?

A/F vs. EGT is a good way to gauge how far off base your timing should be at various rpm.

Listening to detonation just lets you know when you've reached the knock limit for w/e fuel you're using, assuming something isn't fucked up causing detonation.

Re: egt?

Ok nice.

I am planning on using and wide band, egt and can.

From what I have read you can tune your af first using the wide band (ignoring egt reading) then tune ignition with the egt. Retarded is hot advanced is cold you would lesion for knock to make sure you have not gone to far with ignition. At least that’s what I am planning on doing.

What company do you recommend? Band clamps?

Re: egt?

I never have used an EGT. I only use det cans, wide band, and I PULL MY PLUGS AND READ THEM. I live where its nice and hot too and have put many hard driven miles on this car. Now i am only running 9 psi on a stock b16a2. I would probably use a EGT when i get into higher boost levels. Your plug reading i would think is the best skill that should be developed in any tuning.

I let off on my truck if the egt's go over 1550 for too long O0

i never heard of band clamp egt sensor but i think they would not be accurate because it would not be measuring egts it would be measuring ex manifold temp. and different manifold materials would change the temp. just a theory i dont know if it is decent but thats all i got to offer

Re: egt?

on my old ramhorn manifold I had the egt probe in the #3 runner 2" away from the head.
now I am running a top mount manifold and the egt is in the downpipe 3" away from the turbine outlet. Its about 100 degrees difference, I don't really use it to tune, I use it as a safety precaution to know when to let off while boosting on the autobahn my temps usually shoot up to 1600degrees at WOT 5th gear.
I use the zeitronix integrated in the wideband.

I really wanna install a knock monitor though.

Re: egt?

did not wan't to let it out because I know someone is gonna buy up all the probes and sell them on ebay for autometer's price but here you go.
$23 a probe kit.
www.aircraftspruce.com , then you need something to read it.

Thanks. I have a knock monitor now http://www.talkjdm.com/showthread.php?t=3284 came up with this. I think I would still like to get an egt. I don’t know what im doing yet just wanted some input.

do you already run water injection if not it can possibly help stabalize those temps

Re: egt?

yes run water/methanol injection, but I don' notice any difference in egt temps, I do notice a difference in IAT though I've read that honda IAT sensors takes 15 seconds to give data. I am gonna try and data log to focus on the egt when I put the car back together. I have these mahle pistons with some really tight clearance maybe it will change the way my motor runs in all ways.

Re: egt?

be careful with tight clearance.. or they are made to high hp and require this tight clearance i guess?? low thermal expansion.. or what ever..?? you know what your doing im sure..

the pistons are made with different type of alloy, I was researching it, they said something about high silicon content makes it less maleable , less expansion, so you use stock clearance.

awesome read I like this set-up I'm trying this soon.

I works ok at the moment I am trying to get less electrical noise. Gos a bit crazy around an alternator.

wow thats cool so this way its possible to turn out uber high hp out of 4 cylinder and have the rings last for a long posibbly....
