Dont know shit about tuning

As of right now I’m running the SMC controller on my turbo 89 crx hf. To say the least, it runs like ---- and isn’t making as much power as it should. I’m looking to set up turbo edit, but I don’t completely understand the process.

I know I need to get a PM6 ecu out of a 90-91 Si. Will that fit right in? and will the tuning make it compensate for the extra .1 liter etc?

I just picked up a Dual Power Willem EPROM Programmer off of ebay.. What kind of chips do I need to buy for it? Also, is the kind that you recommend eraseable? Or should I pick up a couple.

After that I need to get a zif socket etc…. I’ll probably end up getting one from Xenocron.

From there I need to make a basemap in turboedit for the PM6.

Once I have the basemap it is driveable, just not especially safe because it isn’t very accurate. Right?

Then I can take it to my friend’s house where I can use his wideband.

Here’s where I’m confused. How does the datalogging work? What kind of cable connects the “4 pin CN Datalogging Header” to my computer?

I also need to install ECU control and run that for datalogging. How does it represent the data in the end?

After you find out what all you need to change, you come back home, make the changes on turboedit and burn a new chip.

Then try it a couple of times until you are happy with the results.

When in boost I want about 12.1 A/F.. What about vaccum?

I’m sorry for all the questions, but I’ve been searching for about 3 days straight and still don’t feel like I know anything. I really want to get it right the first time so I don’t have a lot of down time with my car.

You sound like you have been doing a lot of reading and you have most of it down right.

You need an RS232--TTL kit to hook up to your ECU and then hook the DB9 connector to a laptop to read the signals coming from the ECU for datalogging. I can sell you a kit for that as well as a kit for socketing your ECU.

$18 for the RS232 kit and $21 for the ECU socketing kit

ECU control shows you a live representation of where the ECU is running in the fuel and ignition maps. So you can see what AFRs you are running from your wideband, then look at the laptop to see what cells in the grid the ECU is using, and then adjust that area until you see the proper AFRs that you want to see.

In low boost (1-4 psi) you want to see a 12.5 - 13.0 A/F
In higher boost (5-10psi) you want to see a 11.7-12.3 A/F
In low load vacuum areas, 14.7-15.0 is a good A/F
In higher load areas 12.7-13.5 is a good range to shoot for

Hopefully you have read my write-ups on TE

Alrighty, couple more questions...

First. About how many tries should it take me to get it all tuned correctly?

Second. I've seen lots of different PM6 ecu's. I've seen what i need to do if it's an automatic, but other than that are they all the same?

37820-PM6-L18
37820-pm6-a09
37820-PM6-L070

Whats the difference?

And I still don't know which kind of chips I want... HELP!

Lastly, when is HMT v.2 supposed to come out?

Thanks

#1 - I have no idea, it all depends on your experience and the tools you have at your disposal.

#2 - The PM6 ECUs came in two variety...88-89 version does not have an external Eprom (this is the chip) so unless you desolder the MCU and put in a daughter board (or equivalent wire) you cant chip these ECUs the 'normal' way.

The 90-91 Version (PM6-A09 & PM6-L09 are the US version codes) come from the 90-91 EX Civic and CRX Si have the external Eprom and are easily chippable.

You want 256 byte chips (32k) that are 150ns or faster. There are a lot of options out there but you need to have the right burner to burn them.
