Detonation Problem

I just installed a IHI turbo setup for my 98 civic(D16y7). With the wastegate on my car it runs 4psi, feels like stock for me, so i unpluged the wastegate and the car runs a solid 7psi it never goes beyond that point and hawls some ass, but at high rpm(4k and beyond) the detonation begins. I run 93 octane and just put in a new fuel filter, and spark plugs. I cant figure out whats he problem, is the car lacking fuel? if so should i just add a fuel pressure regulator or a fuel pressure regulator with new injectors? thanks for any advice.

Re:Detonation Problem

you need some kind of extra fuel.... FMU maybe

your engine won't last long if you keep beating it to death without adding extra fuel

Re:Detonation Problem

thanks man, but why can't i just use a fuel pressure regulator?

Re:Detonation Problem

what do you mean. it'll be hard to make it run right if you get bigger injectors and try and adjust the fuel pressure around. the easiest way is stock injectors and FMU

I would look into an upgraded fuel pump if your running an FMU also.

in the meantime...retard your timing at least 2 degrees. try that and see if it helps

You are boosting without fuel management? :o

Re:Detonation Problem

ok i installed the fmu now soon as i hit around 5K the car acts like it is lagging fuel. Which fuel pump should be good for me now?

Re:Detonation Problem

What size FMU are you using? If it is at least a 10:1 you should have way more than enough fuel. Does it fall on its face and put you through the windshield(not really, but..)? I doubt a pump would fix that problem. Do you have any gauges at all?

Re:Detonation Problem

i'm using the 12.1 fmu from Vortech. the website said it was good for 10psi and under on stock injectors. all i have is a boost gauge.

Re:Detonation Problem

I'm having a hard time believing you are running lean with a 12:1. Very strange..... ???

Re:Detonation Problem

what could be wrong, when it hits 5K it starts to drop rpm and raise again, then drop, do you understand what i'm saying? i cant of a good way to explain it.

So with no vacuum line at all to the wastegate you run 7psi? Sounds like a major boost leak to me, could be the reason you're detonating.

i went to a local tuning shop and they said even though i have a fmu, i should look into upgrading it, i'm picking it up for $130 something.
