DET CANs
Hey guys,
I'm almost ready to start my first tune session on my car, but I wanted to make a det can first. I want to know what you guys used for the tubing, and what do you guys use as the “ear phones?” I hear normal vac/fuel lines don’t carry sound to well, so, hose for air tools work best, is this true? Also, where do you guys bolt the bottom end of your det cans to? There are some places the stock exhaust manifold used to be bolted to for support, but I don’t know if it close enough to the head. Anyway, any pics, parts list or general advice on det can construction is appreciated. Thanx. |
Re: DET CANs
Fuel line or air tool line work well.
People use the big lawn work ear muff style ear protectors and just drill a hole in each side. Bolt it to the block, I try to stay away from the head just to minimize the amount of valvetrain noise it picks up, but you can hear detonation over it anyways so it really doesn't matter. |

Re: DET CANs
I bolt mine to the head because its quick, and easy. Yes, you can hear the valves banging away, but you can still hear the faint onset of detonation all the way to full blown preignition. I use a regular mechanics stethoscope with longer tubing. I used a brass barb, and retapped the end to the metric size of the bolt hole in the head. Theres an available threaded hole on the intake/drivers side.
Next to a wideband, its my most valued tool by far. Plus, you get to see how much timing you need to take out as RPM's ramp up based on the ignition advance thats being added in by the ECU that you didnt know about before. |

there are plenty of pre-tapped holes that would work great, do we really need to JB weld just cause its HMT?
