DB9 (Serial) Datalogging Cable HOWTO?

Hey, I'm hoping atleast one of you guys is a cheapass and decided to build your own datalogging cable out of a null modem cable or serial cable and a CDROM Audio Cable before.

I need to know which pinouts on the DB9 cable are used to match up to which color of wire on the cdrom cable.

if i get some help i will post up a howto and pictures and ----.

Are you trying to wire a straight serial cable directly to cn2?

It doesn't work that way, you need something to convert the ttl communications from cn2 to the serial communications that the computer can read.
Like a max232 or some ----.

oh? ----.
there was someone on hondaswap that said they'd done it like what i'm describing

Well I don't know anything about the CD-rom audio cable, but it must have some sort of converter in it?

I'd say search for some schematics on the audio cable, looking for an rx, tx, and a gnd.

no the audio cable is just the 3 wire cable that plugs in to the ecu.

I think the USB>Serial cable might be what converts the signal? (i have a keyspan and a belkin unit)

but from what he posted it looks like he just ran cable straight from the ecu to the serial db9 and then used the serial converter usb box to convert the signal?

usb-serial converter does just that, converts serial protocol to usb protocol and vice versa. You need something to convert ttl to either serial or usb from what i understand. http://web.archive.org/web/200512241.../SerialAdapter

I have used the usmod3, and the dku-5 cables both successfully.

more info on those here:

usmod3: http://web.archive.org/web/200512310...erialConverter

dku-5(nokia): http://web.archive.org/web/200512221...bleDatalogging

The usmod 3 is more expensive, but i had a few laying around from work prototypes and it was really easy to wire. the dku took some playing cause the cheap ass ebay one i got had random undocumented colors, but it was like 3 bucks shipped.

Re: DB9 (Serial) Datalogging Cable HOWTO?

so i'd have more luck if i dissassembled my belkin usb>serial cable and used it instead?

seems like i'm still missing whatever is being used to convert from tty to serial..

and how did this guy on hondaswap get his to work by just wiring the tty signal into a serial cable?

Re: DB9 (Serial) Datalogging Cable HOWTO?

Probably because he's a retard and didn't explain that he had a 2nd converter? That white db9 connector doens't look very empty to me, seems to have something in it. I can't imagine the two protocals being converted w/in the simple usb/serial adapter. I've used those blue serial/usb converters for rs232 communication, and the ecu doesn't spit ---- out in that format.

GO to ebay, buy a nokia dku-5 cable for $5-10, then make your cable. You can do the hyperterminal test to see what's what. You'll have to buy a converter of some type regardless.
