Chipped p28 problems
 

One of the guys i chipped a p28 for is running into some trouble. He lives halfway across the country (I'm in FL he's in IN) so its rather difficult for me to troubleshoot a car i don't have. Ok he's sayin he gets a solid CEL but the engine turns over fine, idle is better than its ever been, partial throttle is good, and its good in boost too. The problem is that the motor won't rev past 6000rpm. I didn't set the FTL so its not a rev limiter. He said it starts to sound like his old toyota after the engine socked up a sock (don't ask lol). I guess like its muffled and won't rev any higher. I could kinda tell something was wrong with the ecu when i plugged it into my harness because the Solid CEL came on immediately as opposed to the virgin p28 i have that waits about 15-20 seconds to throw a CEL. The code was the vtec spool soleniod(i have an f22a engine non-vtec so thats expected). I cut jumper j1 and it still didn't change the immediate solid CEL. His setup consists of:
Stock 92-95 ex engine
t3 super 60
440cc injectors
chipped p28 on uberdata

any help is appreciated

Sounds like its way too rich at ~6000rpms...

Although the solid CEL is weird....should be in limp mode :-\

you sent him the ecu knowing it threw a cel, you should have figured the problem out first. possibly a bad burn, if it was a 'tuned' .bin that someone else made, it may not have been compatable with the version you burned it from, if it was a tune and you altered it, sometimes you can get problems from that. you just have to trouble shoot solid cel's til you get them figured out, and yeah, it's hard to do when the ecu isn't there, that's why you fix it before you send it back ;)

negative sir there was no way for me to know. Its obvious its going to throw a code in my car and the only code that it threw was the code 21 or 23(even when i disabled vtec on uber)...whichever the vtec spool soleniod code is. He told me i had a couple of weeks to get it to him while he figured some other stuff out about his downpipe and such but then told me that i had like 5 days a day or so later. I did keep the ecu over a day more to troubleshoot some more. I tested the ecu in my car to make sure it wasn't in limp mode by revving up to about 5K. So theres no way i could have known the outcome without having a vtec civic to plug the ecu into. I don't think the ecu was tested b4 he sent it to me but i'll ask him.
For the map i modified the stock p28.bin with 124 boost efficiency, stepped retard thats was like 20-21 degrees at 11psi. I'll ask him if the 6k thing happens all the time or if he can slowly rev past 6K. That would solve the theory of too much fuel seeing as i didn't modify the vacuum portions.

solid cel = bad burn. tell him to cut j1, if the cel goes away, it's the burn. non vtec .bin on a non vtec ecu should give no vtec codes unless it's one of few 11f0 boards taht already has an sk5151 at ic14 for vtec solenoid (i've ran in to that problem a few times)

it's a 5 pin high side power switch that is used to activate vtec solenoids and auto trans lock up's, they're located at ic13 and ic14 for vtec and ic15 and ic16 for auto's. if you have a manual non vtec p06, you shouldn't have any, but some p06 11f0 boards that i've seen already have one at ic14 for vtec solenoids, i don't know why, but it's a dream come true if you plan on converting it to a p28 anyways. i have a short write up on it on the uber forums.

wouldn't really matter about the non-vtec ecu and non-vtec map tho cause he's vtec and so is the p28 ecu he's using. Trust me i burned the right map. If i have him cut j1 i pray he can put it back together :-\
