Best way to datalog (uberdata)

Sup guys. I'm a little confused with which method is best for datalogging.

I'm trying to get my engine management setup before I order all my parts for my turbo project. Right now I have:

96 Integra LS
Chipped OBD-1 P75
OBD2-OBD1 Harness
Nasty laptop

I burned a 27C256 with a basemap, put it in the new ECU, and started the car right up... No problem.

Anyway - I'd like to put my 450's in and start tuning them for my NA setup just as practice for when I go turbo. I wan't to set my ECU up for datalogging with uberdata. I've heard of several ways to datalog.

My laptop has both serial and USB ports so I'm inclined to go with which method is easiest and most reliable.

I've heard this is the most plug and play method out there? It looks like it just plugs right over the connector on CN2. Anyone use this cable?

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

Still will need to solder a 4pin header into the CN2 port with that Superdroid cable. Either way you'll be soldering to CN2, so it's really up to you which methid you preffer. I've tried the USB cable and it didn't work out so well because I was using a USB adapter card :-\
But I'm now going to try the Serial type because i know for sure that will work.

Is that all I have to do? Where can I get the header.

I am personaly partial to using the cell phone cables w/ usb. You have to only solder 3 freaking wires to the ECU.

This is the exact cable I used

Yeah same here. I have one I can sell you if you need it. Only reason it didn't work for me is because I have an old wrinklyass laptop that was unwilling to cooperatu with the USB devices :P Real easy to wire up and get working though if thats what your looking for.

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

Is there anyway you can solder the 3 wires to a female connector that plugs into the CN2 Connector?

Sorry for my newbishness, I'm new to this stuff but extremely interested.

I'm going to radioshack tomorrow to try to get the cable - if they don't have it ill buy it off of ya man.

[Edit]
Lemme clairify because I think I'm making an idiot of myself...

My ECU has a white 4 pin connector soldered to CN2 slot shown here:
http://home.mn.rr.com/keebler65/hond...culogging2.jpg
Is this connector something the previous owner put in or is it how the ECU came?

It looks like that RS232 to TTL Converter would just plug right in or maybe I'm just retarded.

Go to our Forums and ask your questions there if you want. I am partial to the Nokia cable setup as well because of the USB. EIther way, you are going to have to solder onto the board.

Here, I went and took some pics of my ECU:

So, will the TTL connector plug into that or do I need to remove the white connector to make it work?

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

your ecu has already been prepped for data logging, that's weird. either way, the max 233 doesn't just 'plug' up. the corresponding wires aren't in the correct order from the converter to the ecu, so you'll have to do some soldering on one end regardless.

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

Yeah I bought the ECU already chipped by Phiz. I already sent him a message asking him what cable he uses but I wanted to see if anyone here knew.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

all the 4 pin header does is make it easier to solder wires. it depends on what you want. the nokia cable only requires you to solder 3 wires (pins 1,2, and 4), the max233 adapter cost more and requires more work b/c you have to assemble the max233 board. if you have usb port on your lap top, go with the nokia cable, but nothing, i repeat nothing is just going to 'plug' right up to the header.

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

Okay so not even the superdroid cable will connect to it?

That's fine, i'll try to get the cable at radio shack today.

I don't mind soldering at all - just trying to save myself a little time.

Thanks for the reply projekteg.

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

i've never used a super droid, but my understanding is that yes, it comes with a femal 4 pin adapter and will plug up, but you have to switch the wires around on the actual cable assembly to have the corresponding wires match up at cn2. (tx,rx,+5v,ground) i believe is the order on the cable, and the order at cn2 is (ground,rx,+5v,tx)

If you can find the Nokia go with that. You will spend less money, and it is the same amount of time.

are you sure you bought that one its a:
NOKIA 3100 3200 USB Data Cable +CD driver
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=5730822491

not the
NOKIA 6100 6610 7210 7250 7250i 5100 USB Data Cable+CD
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tem=5735995541
that uberdata forum suggested
http://www.ecimulti.org/uberdata/for...;threadid=2258

cause i think i bought the wrong one or did you get it to work or did you accidently post the wrong one?

MY CABLE HAS: BLUE, YELLOW, AND WHITE, NO SHIELDING. WILL IT WORK OR DO I HAVE TO GET ANOTHER CABLE.

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

well you can use a ton of different cables. You just have to figure out what wires are send, receive, and ground. There is a post on PGMFI.org that listed a site that had a chart for a ton of cables. Most write-ups are for the specific Nokia cable, but many will work.

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

you already have the 4 pin header, just get the super droids cable, you won't have to do any soldering or anything, they're only 30 bucks shipped, i've started using them b/c they're much easier with the 4 pin header.

Re:Best way to datalog (uberdata)

just solder wires to the board and ur done.
edit: through the board i guess is more proper.

you have 4 pin header connectors in your computer. Rip one out :)

Re: Best way to datalog (uberdata)

so then theres no chance that a usb extension cable with the male end in the lappy and the female end on the header will work? seeing as how teg said that it shouldn't plug onto the header

Re: Best way to datalog (uberdata)

If you have a female end to put on the end of the USB cable, you should be able to plug it into that little white male port

I got the tip from xenocron, but I use the power supply connectors from 3.5in drives. I just happed to have a lot of junk computers, so they are free to me.

Re: Best way to datalog (uberdata)

I have been using the same 4 pin female connector that comes with the RTP kits and also the some of the other datalogging kits. you just solder the corresponding wires to the correct pins. Slip them in the connector and then plug it in. But to tell you the truth, datalogging using ebay USB cables has become such a pain in the ass lately, that I have given up. I have used many cables, and the one stated above with the blue, yellow and white will work. Just put the blue wire where the green one was on the other cable and you are set. So it should be blue -> pin 1 , yellow pin->2 and white -> pin 4.

I just got a bad batch of cables, I serisously don't understand. I will get 5 cables in and 3 will work two will not. Using the exact same cables, even using the same ecu in some cases. Even tried soldering to the board and also soldering a connector. Still nothing. So I give up and I am going serial. It is much easier and less of a hassle to get working in my opinion. The superdroid cable will plug right in. you need to swtich the +5 and the Rx I believe. But you will see when you get it, the cables are marked.

i hate usb cables, they're a pita. serial cables are so fresh and so clean clean.

not to mention, you don't have to search the net to find the right drivers, pin outs for your particular cable, etc. and no switching of any wires with this particular cable either, it plugs right up.

I agree with you 100 percent. USB is just a big pain in my ass, especially when doing a bunch of ecus.

I should have gotten the longer one. :-\
