afc timing advance
hey quick question for all you engine management gurus out there: i know you can retard ignition by the methods listed in the faq but could you retard the ignition caused by an afc with an adjustable intake cam gear say from skunk2 or aem?
thanks in advance |
Re: afc timing advance
How do feel by retarding your cam timing that it will retard your ignition timing?

Re: afc timing advance
well i have an obd2 thus chipping is uh...yea...
and my eyes are still burning..... and i have no idea what i was thinking, i read adjustable timing on the cam gears and for some reason thought it was for ignition... im trying to run higher compression pistons on a budget and maybe boost later on so any help would be appreciated |

i understand his questioning if you advanced the cam 3* and its hooked dirrectally to the dizzy he thinks the timming will them be 3* advanced too |
Re: afc timing advance
No, it won't change your ignition timing. The only way to do that physically is by moving the distributor.

Re: afc timing advance
Adjusting the intake cam will also adjust your ignition timing - which causes a bunch of unwanted ---- to happen as a side effect - IF you are OBD1.
OBD2 compares distributor-mounted CKP sensor to the crank-mounted CKF sensor, and thereby nullifies any ignition advance/retard you dial in by adjusting the intake cam. It won't however, nullify the CEL you'll get from having the sensors out of alignment, nor will it nullify the loss of power that ------- with your intake cam's alignment for no reason caused. AFC hack ignition fuckage is not a linear thing. Dialling the distributor back for OBD1 cars, using MSD BTMs, etc, in no way shape or form address the way the stock ignition maps are stretched to encompass the MAP sensor's full span. For example, taking one or two degrees out per psi of boost with a BTM does NOTHING to address your timing being advanced 12-15 degrees at 0 psi. It's a bad idea, and there is no band aid for it.

:3 If you want to boyracer out a car, get a pre-OBD2 ANYTHING. Emissions is going to ---- you in the ass if you try to get any power out of an OBD2 setup with your level of knowledge. Speaking of, you need to do a lot more research and work on your mechanical skills before you try to do more than maintainence. Not trying to beat on your pride, but you need to pay your dues if you every expect to know anything and be able to do anything. |
Re: afc timing advance
harness conversion + chipsed ecu then tune your timing
unless that use any remote control unite to change timming during drage O0 |
Re: afc timing advance
well no use in making myself seem more retarded than i already am >_<
i have a k20a3 so i was trying to build the bottom end up via stronger crank and type s pistons, but as you say no gains without the head or proper tuning so when or if i ever get around to turboing its probably not going to be my current car. thanks for sticking with me and forgive me my idiocity "bow" |
Re: afc timing advance
It takes a minutes research to learn everything you've got to know in order to do a good job with a modern EFI vehicle. Stick with it, you'll get there.
