Default Timing Gear OFF ?!?!?! I'm going crazy~ PICTURES!!!!!! help B18A1

Ok, so despite how many times i tried lining up the timing belt, cam gears, and crank gear, I can't figure it out.

When i had the Crank on TDC with the mark lined up perfectly, the teeth on the belt were right on TOP of the teeth of the cam gears when they were straight up and down... I figured they must be angled slightly... but more towards advance or retarded? I leaned the gears towards advance... Is this wrong?

You will notice in the fist two pictures, that whent he crank gear is @ TDC, the cam gears lean towards advance. But when the Cam gears are staight up, the crank gear is half a tooth off.

I moved the belt a tooth so that the cam gears were on the same angle, but retarded half a tooth rather than advanced, but it was even more off...

What is correct? Should the cam gears angle towards the back of the engine (retarded) or towards the front of the engine (advanced). I have concluded Top Dead Center on the cam gears is NOT straight up.

Help?

These pictures show the Crank gear at TDC, but the gears are off. YES< i tightened the belt also

And when the Cam Gears are straight up, the crank gear is now off. Both gears WILL NOT LINE UP at the same time with the belt tight... its off half a tooth

Once you get everything lined up right put the timing belt one the ex. cam first then onto the Intake cam, turn the crank like 3 teeth counter clockwise then tighten the tensioner.
Hope that helps

I feel your pain, since my H22A was decked and the head was plained I ran into the same situation. I ended up being off a too in the retard direction in the intake and a tooth in the advance direction on the exhaust. I started with adjusting the cam gear advance on the intake and turn the motor over and it responded then I retarded the exhaust cam and it idled like it did before the FULL BUILD. This has been in just the past couple of days. Talk to TOUGH GUY, he can be an *** but he does HELP. I give him props, he made me look retarded on the forum but I learned from him. Get adjustable cam gears and you can dial them in to a descent point until you get to a dyno or a professional that and dial them in using some type of compression tester. I know I'm not much help but thats all I can do to help ya out a bit.

There are 2 notches on the outside edge of the cam gear when looking straight at them...these 2 notches need to lay horizontal with the head. If you look in between the gears on the black plastic you will see a raised line...line them up according to that, and the exhaust mark should always line up with the intake mark. When you tighten the tensioner, it will move the intake cam off about one tooth, so find the mark that's right for the intake, and then move it toward the exhaust cam one tooth. Tighten the tensioner and it should move back to TDC.

It looks fine to me.

In the last pictures you show the crank slightly before TDC and the CAM lines are not quite lined up, but if turn it so that the crank lines up with TDC the CAM lines would appear to line up correctly.

Don't look at the arrows, look at the lines like slo_crx1 mentioned.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEA. hmt for the win again~

I never even noiticed those little notches. I didnt know the B had them like the sohc. I've done the sohc Timing belt a zillion tims... GOD i feel like a ------ noob. :1

With the crank at TDC, the cam gears line up perfectly with that line on the tb cover!!!

thanks guyz~!!!

and for the record, the cam gears "UP" is angled forward (advanced) slightly... but the notches line up perfectly.... Tell Acura they should have designed it so the arrow TRULY points "UP" haha.

They use them for tolerances at the assembly factory, you always have to have room for play.

Nah, I think the "UP" is more or less to make sure the lobes start out in the correct position. Think about it, even though they do have the lines on the edges of the gear, without the "UP" mark you might accidently position the cam 180* off.

100% right on that one.

If one of the cams were off 180 degrees, all compression would be released as the intake valve would be opening with the exhaust valve at the same time.
