Default For you military guys.... long distance shooting

I just went to the shooting range today for the first time in a while. The extent of my shooting training is someone showing me how to line up the sights and to hold your breath before you shoot. I would love to learn more and get better at shooting distance... even 100 yards accurately would be exciting for me.

Right now I just have a .22 but I'm thinking about picking up a .223 sometime in the future.

I'm looking for either some advise or some links. I would love to learn about judging wind, distance, etc.

Any tips?

I've never tried long distance. I've never owned a gun that was accurate enough for it. It would be fun though. I'm not sure if a .22 would be the best choice though. They start dropping real quick don't they?

i found it easier to hit a target at 300 meters than 150 with an m16 because the trajectory of the round is weird, but its not that hard, just takes practice, don't really hold your breath though, there is a natural pause when you breathe out before you start to breathe in again, you want to wait for that pause to sqeeze the trigger, also don;t grip the barrel with your hand, let it rest in your palm (so you don't jerk to the left/right) and curl your finger and use the very tip of your index finger to sqeeze the trigger.

The big thing is when you squeeze the trigger to fire the round , dont let the trigger go till a few seconds after. most people get in the habit of tryig to see if the round hit after they have fired and letting go of the trigger quickly after the round is fired causes the barrel to move and change the trajectory of your round and also its all about sight picture you must aim at the same exact spot every time or else your shot group will be sloppy

That what I meant for the breath... I just couldn't figure out how to word it. Thanks for the tips though.

And no... I'm not planning on going for distance with a .22. That's just to get me better in general

.223 is a great gun. Youll love it. Keep in mind that when you are holding a gun you always going in a sort of figure 8 motion. When your ready to shoot, breath out till its comfortable, then stop breathing for a second or two. During that time, watch your small figure 8 and SQUEEZE (not pull) the trigger when your figure 8 reaches the top and is coming back down towards the center. The best thing you can do for yourself is to just go out and shoot a lot. It will help you get rid of the urge to squint when you pull the trigger. I just had to requalify at work with the .223 ar15 from 75 yards. They can't score your target becuase if an inmate escapes and you take one shot and hit them in the head, they can say that it was a lucky shot. They just teach to shoot for center mass. I scored 10/10 with 6 in the middle of the chest, 2 in the head, and 1 in the gut, and 1 in the arm.

Good suggestions here on shooting, but just like a pistol or an engine build set a goal for yourself. What distance do you want to reach to, how much are you willing to spend on a rifle/scope, how accurate do you want it to be (1 MOA, 1 1/2 MOA)?

I know your probably not interested in hand loading cartridges. But if you start experimenting with different primers, powders, bullets, ect... eventually you will find a perfect match for your rifle.

Buy a reloading manual. Most have detailed information on all different kinds of rounds. Information like:

Bullet drop charts vs yardage for specific grain rounds
powder charges and CUP pressures
powder types
primers
bullet weights and types
all kinds of other useful ----

BTW a lot of off the shelf ammo is ---- for long range accuracy shooting unless you find something that happens to shot good. It really depends on the rifle/ammo match.

I'll take a look into reloading ammo. Isn't it more cost effective to do that too?
