that's the thing, the price and even the availability varies pretty wildly according to region. being in seattle is nice, because the port is here, and there is a growing demand here for it because of the abundance of tree huggers with money. out here it's actually cheaper than most hardwoods.

yes it is. there's about a 4 year turnaround for harvest, it's environmental impact is very light, and it's getting cheaper by the day as more and more gets imported here. compare it to hardwood... it will outlast/outperform and depending on region be priced better.
