For you computer nerds......
I was just curious, Im currently dorming at a University that doesnt allow the downloading from others peers using such programs as bearshare and any torrent downloader. My question is, is there any way I can get around the network firewall. If i could I could make use of the fast internet. Any ideas would be helpfull

As long as they don't use a proxy and have port 80 open, then it's possible to use some programs that allow port 80. There are however some smart firewall programs that can detect p2p traffic over port 80.
I don't know which ones can do this, but i think limewire is one of them.
However, having been a network admin, I know what a pain in the *** it is to make the network useable for everyone and keeping one guy from screwing it up for all. So don't use any of the info I just gave you.

Back when I dormed at UW they had a very similar thing. They would just decrease the speeds on P2P programs so the most you could download would be about 5 Kb/s unless you happened to connect to someone in the university network, then your DL rate skyrocketed.
You can't get around it by changing your port (Unless, like I said, the University IT staff are a bunch of noobs, which I doubt). You're probably SOL.

Re: For you computer nerds......
if you had another computer set up as a server/client to take care of p2p downloads with the client software then have that machine send you the files but i think thats alittle overcomplicated for what you want to do. I dont know your schools system so i cant tell you anything really. Other than using a trick port like 80 or 5190 or some other commonly used port. Would your school crack down if some nerd with thousands of files set up an apache server with its document root being his music/movies folder and gave the ip out to people on campus?
