Default Yay! Chemical Plant Blows Up in KC. 56K Beware.

Chemical plant not too far from my house goes up in flames. I was driving home from work and saw the huge *** black cloud of smoke and thought to myself, that can't be good. I got to my buddies gas station to fill up and he tells me that that a chemical plant in the bottoms is burning out of control. I got home and it is all over the news. Pretty crazy stuff. One channel said that they tried to find another event of this magnitude in KC's history and found nothing for the past 25 years. The cloud is dropping crap out of the air all the way to Johnson County Kansas, which is about 20 miles form the site.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Multiple explosions at a chemical distribution facility shook an industrial area of Kansas City on Wednesday, sending an ominous smoke cloud above the downtown skyline and prompting the evacuation of nearby schools, homes and businesses.

There were no immediate reports of injuries, but police were busy driving up and down nearby streets warning that more explosions were expected at the Chemcentral facility, which stores and distributes various chemicals and solvents. Firefighters were not battling the blaze and planned to let it burn itself out.

Fire officials also told residents citywide to avoid picking up debris carried by the dark cloud that streamed out of downtown, although Fire Chief Richard Dyer said the material was not highly toxic. The cloud appeared to be dropping a sticky substance as it moved to the southwest, but Dyer said it was unlikely that anything falling was dangerous.

"None of these are what those of us in the field would call exotic chemicals. None of these have a high rating for toxicity," Dyer said, adding that officials were monitoring the air within a two-mile radius.

The fire began about 2:20 p.m. after several 55-gallon drums containing chemicals exploded, touching off more explosions and fires, Kansas City Fire Marshal Floyd Peoples said.

More than four hours later, flames continued to shoot from one large chemical tank, and fire officials worried they could cause an explosion of three 30,000-gallon rail tank cars parked on a nearby siding. Images from the air showed smoke or steam spewing from one car.

Fire Battalion Chief Joe Vitale said he had been told the cars contained mineral spirits, a general name for such petroleum products as paint thinner.

Because of the threat of the rail cars exploding, firefighters were ordered to stay a half-mile from the flames.

Ken Hannon, a spokesman for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, said a number of chemicals are at the property, including mineral spirits, turpentine and other solvents.

"I'm looking through the list. I'm not seeing anything that's jumping out at me" as particularly hazardous, he said. "Flammability seems to be the main concern right now for most of these chemicals."

The explosions northeast of downtown sent up smoke that could be seen for at least 30 miles around the city.

Dyer said officials were evacuating people within a one-mile radius of the plant, including about 500 people who lived in area, and officials had gone door-to-door through several blocks to get people out. A shelter was being set up at North Kansas City High School.

Dyer said firefighters had abandoned attempts to fight the blaze and would just let it die out, hopefully by Thursday morning, although it could burn for a few days.

Plant superintendent Craig Nienhueser said workers heard a hissing noise inside the building. He went around to the back and noticed some flames, at which point the workers were evacuated.

"We are just thankful everybody is OK. Now we just have to work with the fire department to get this contained.

"Fifty-some years and not a problem," he said of the facility.

Dan Brennan, an attorney at Chemcentral's headquarters in Bedford Park, Ill., said the plant has 15 to 20 workers.

Emergency responders from the Environmental Protection Agency were on the scene and gathering information.

"We just don't know what's up there at this point," EPA spokeswoman Kim Olson said.

Around 6 p.m., the EPA sent up a plane to fly through the smoke cloud at about 2,500 feet to take air samples. The agency said it would take some time to evaluate the samples.

The Kansas City school district sent students from eight elementary schools in the northeast area to Paseo High School to keep them as far away from the explosions as possible, a district spokeswoman said.

Kansas City Southern shut down its rail yard operation near the plant and evacuated workers as a precaution.

Dyer said the Chemcentral facility did not have a history of problems, but it is a location that has always troubled the fire department because of its proximity to a casino and residential neighborhoods.

"It's a well-run facility with a pretty darn good safety record," he said. "When you ask if it's something that comes up as a problem facility -- absolutely not."

According to the article it is stuff like mineral spirits. Mainly just highly flammable liquids.

One of my buddies told me that ---- was dropping. Don't know for sure, but its probably soot.

say hello to random diseases and illnessess!!!!!!!

but holy crap!, worst we get down here is half my state is on fire, we even stole fire fighters from the US, our country is rooted, we have soo many water restrictions, we cant wash our cars, water gardens, cant even take longer than like 2 min showers, not aloud to fill pools/spa's or even baths

but we're in like year 7 of a drought.. gotta love australia, water restrictions and bush fires and then the cops in them fast cars doin burnouts and the lebo's rioting when the cops take the cars away, now we have a dob in a "Hoon hotline"

i suppose much more crazier ---- happens over there as to get a hand gun here is impossible, u can get a 202 rifle/shotgun if your a farmer...

they're was 7 RPG's stolen from the army and one of them was intended to be used on a house near my work but insted they just shot hte ---- outta the joint...gangsta's!!!!!

but we do have roads with no speed limits down here, i know a few blokes who drove too fast too long and fried their transmissions like 240 for 2 hours, speedo reads 220 max.. (km/h)

anyway, how'd it catch on fire?? someone making chemical bombs?

Holy crap man!

Someone was going to use an RPG on a house nearby. ---- that ----!

Don't know exactly how it started. The facility has gone for over 50 years without a single incident. I guess someone fucked up.

I'm going to go ahead and say when they say nothing there is toxic they're talking out of their *** to keep people from panicking. There's no ------- way they know every reaction that went down, or what chemicals reacted with what after ---- went chaotic. Most toxic compounds are relatively simple compounds, and its no big deal for any of those compounds to form in a fire like that.
