I'm a similar boat and the opinion I've come up with is, for the average guy, I'd say PS3. Low failure rate, great hardware, free internet play, blu-ray player, good games. I'd get an Xbox360 if they didn't fail so frequently and if online gaming didn't cost $10 a month.

The new 360's that came out a few weeks ago are much less likely to fail, actually the previous revision less than a year ago pretty much fixed the issue.
And it's not $10 a month, it's $45/year or $3.75/mo

I'm dated. At some point or another Xbox live was $10/mo. $45 is much more affordable. I know the 360's hardware was basically resolved a year ago with the new power supply/hardware. I was unaware of a newer release of the 360.
To me, the PS3 having the blue ray player makes it worth buying. I like movies. If I belonged to a private torrent tracker where I could download movies at 500+kbs I'd think about buying a 360 and just stream the videos along the network, but with things the way they are now on torrents, 100kbs to download a movie is just masturbatory bullshit. I'll rent/buy a blue ray video or just download a 700mb low res divx video and watch it on my laptop/SDTV. Divx videos on big screen HDTVs looks like hell typically.

Funny you asked this cuase i am going to get a xbox 360 in about a week, I dont play video games that much but a lot of cool games have come out latley and my friends all play online to geather on xbox live so I'm going with xbox.

Game selection hands down goes to the 360, and technology geek stuff goes to the PS3.

Got to give it up for the Xbox 360. Got mine about 3 months ago they have fixed most of their red light problems and even if they may break all do is toss it into a box and get that ---- fixed for free. Yes the PS3 has a blue ray dvd player but it is the lowest grade you can get hell you can go to wal mart or where ever and pick up the same or higher grade player for way cheaper then a PS3. Xbox has some great fun games Gears of war, call of duties, for shooter s and great rpgs and good racing. Xbox live is cheap. plus xbox rocks in HD so movies and games look great.
