the CIA was listening to bin laden's cell phone... until the media reported it... and he stopped using it.
the CIA was listening to bin laden's satellite phone... until the media reported it... and he stopped using it.
along with al qaeda email, phone, etc... when the media reports the US is gaining information this way... the terrorists or enemy stops using that method.

Next thing you know, Johnny will want to take away my guns...
The Pentagon has a media briefing every morning, telling the press what's going on in Iraq. How's that for keeping a lid on things?
If it's a leak, it's an managerial issue at the Pentagon or the White House... If they can't manage their people, I don't know what to tell you. :1

The government has to do things that you and I don't know about in order to give them the upper hand in dealing with terrorists and the rules they play by (which is none).
The media's attempts to make Bush out to be the biggest terrorist in the world are the equivilent to someone standing behind you at the card table giving away what your hand is to your opponent. The wire taps in question haven't effected you, and won't effect you, and you'll never admit that the strategy makes sense to deal with sneaky terrorists. It does make sense, and that's all that really matters when you lay your head down to sleep at night. (Unless you can't stop thinking about the Bush amnesty plan) :P

It's my understanding that anyone with the proper clearance could go to the FISA cout, put in their request and it's pretty much a slam dunk to get it approved. The court is there, just in case, someone decided they wanted to abuse that power. It's not often that that has happened (5 out of 19,000?), but it has happened. However, it hasn't delayed getting approval for surveilence.
I understand the reasoning behind things being classified or secret to protect national security, but whatever. Bush is not omnipotent. He can't rush in and invade Iraq or Afghanistan or China or Taiwan or Japan or India or Pakistan without first getting support and approval... He also can't override or change the Constitution because he feels like it. Democracy is what stops him.
If the media is doing something wrong, then they should be brought up on charges. If they haven't, you really don't have a leg to stand on.

I do have a very strong feeling about the government becoming too big and spying and just overall putting their noses into things before there is a reason, but I just don't see how international taps are a threat to the everyday lives of your average citizen going to work/school, ect.... Red light camera's are more of an invasion than an international phone call to a country that may be supporting terrorism.

the NSA destroyed thousands of records when word of this came out.. i.e. records of people/corporations.. organizations.. all that ---- got shredded against the will of the fbi and the cia.. they did it in fear of lawsuits.. now who's gonna stop bush from tapping into the next presidents head quarters? theres no buffer.. they even set up a secret court to make ---- faster on them and they STILL didnt use it..
