Re:Why mustangs?
when seeking a older 5.0 be picky and take your time. I've seen POS stangs sell for $3000 and I've seen clean stangs with new short block, SVO heads, and lots of bolt-ons sell for $2500...
A good idea would be to do some research on the 5.0s, then goto a local 5.0 hang out and ask those guys about buying one, most likely they know a guys with a desecnt car for real cheap.
Like me, I think paying anymore than $1500 for a crx is stupid, but I see people all the time that pay/payed $3000+ for one....

I drove a 4.6 GT last fall. It did make decent power for a stock car. Suspension and handling sucked *** but it did squat and go pretty well off the launch.
You have to understand that stangs are a different sort of car as compared to the average import. Each was designed with something different in mind.
It feels good to spank a mustang because they don't usually expect it.
A modded mustang pulls up beside you... You hear the exhaust, the whirring of the SC and the lumpy cam you know you're sitting beside something fast. My modded mazda pulls up beside you. Can't see the FMIC it's black. Can't see the giant turbo - hood is closed. All you hear is an exhaust and if I wanted you to you may have heard a BOV.
You get the idea - import sleepers are far easier.

Re:Why mustangs?
I have a full-race mustang that I use for auto-x. MY del slow can finsh with it in the quarter, but the mustang is set up for road racing. To answer the question originally posted, Mustangs are the unimog of racing. You want a drag car, you got a drag car. you want a road racer, you have a road racer, and for cheap. ---- I have 5300 in my mustang from start to finish-they are just inexpensive, hell you can't even do a turbo H-22 swap for that. I love my honda, and I wear my honda hat when I drive my mustang, but nothing beats the the performance to wallet thinness ratio of a good pony. I can wait to TT it wheeeeee!
