From the picture it looks like you were only spinning about 6000 rpms. It barely hit vtec.

Put a wire wheel and a 4.5" grinder and try again.

No seriously, is you are taking the paint down to metal try a wire wheel..it will kick 80 grit *** and produce less heat doing it.
