i have posted this question on turbod16.com too because i want to know what every one thinks.

i have done a ton of side work for a local stereo shop that dabbles in performance parts as well and they owe me like $500.00. my question is this: should i get some pistons and rods through them and throw them in my d16y5 now/over-the-winter in anticipation of selling my bike in the spring and building a turbo kit? i know everything about my engine is against making power, but it is what i got...and i like the challenge.

also, how hard is it to install the pistons and rods? will a helms manual tell me how to do it? can i get it done in a weekend? i am very mechanically inclined and follow directions well, but will i have to pull the engine/tranny to do this work. ( if i do it will just give me an excuse to bye more tools! )

yes you will have to pull the engine. i would also hone the cylinders while your at it, you might have to. its not hard just time consuming and make sure you have all the clearances within spec.

No you will NOT have to pull your engine. I just finished up putting my CTR pistons in my b16. Just jack up your car take the oil pan you'll have to do it on your back but its not that bad. Once you get the new pistons youll have to get your wristpins pressed out of your old pistons so you can get your rods onto your new piston. cost like 25 bucks at most machine shops. Other then that. Its pretty simple. I had never done it before until now and i just went for it not to bad if you know your engine really good.

well i work in a machine shop so getting the wrist pins pressed would not be a problem. are you sure that i replace both the pistons and rods without pulling the engine? that would be cool.

yeah, you can, but i would rather drop the engine. one thing is for sure, if you have to get it honed, you can't do that with the engine in the car, so you may go through the trouble of taking off the oil pan, caps and crank just to find out that you have to hone it and take it out anyways, plus it's a lot easier to install bearings, check clearances, bolt your crank back up with the engine upside down, unless your gonna turn the whole car upside down, that's another story
