What do you guys think about E85?
I normally run the local pump 110 (great stuff for most of my setups under 600whp), and Q16 in some of the faster cars I work on, and now I have one of my Supra buddies wanting me to upgrade his fuel system again, and put 3 pumps in tank, and upgrade his injectors, so he can run E85.
He is already running big power on a built block, on Q16 (never dyno'd street tuned, trapped mid 140's) with an overall wussy setup on everything else, aka small turbo, conservative air fuel and timing. He plans on spraying a direct port shot this year also.
So now he is convinced that he will make the same amount of power (he actually is trying to tell me that he will make more) on E85, which I dont believe for a second.. I was interested in the whole E85 thing when it came out, and I never found the situation where I would really benefit a ton from running it money wise over race gas (its usually the same price as 87 unleaded around here, but nearly every station offers E85).
So if you were him, would you pay me $1200 to convert your car to E85 so you didnt have to pay 12.20 a gallon for Q16? I am convinced he will not be able to keep a "edgy" tune on it for any length of time, and I am fairly convinced that he will just flatout make less power in all situations. In the past he has bought 55 gallon drums of Q16.

I can get a few different flavors of 110 at the local pumps... the big hangout and race spot is about 35 miles away, and I can hit like 7 different 110 stations between my house and there.
I found a place that has really nice consistent and good 110 turbo blue.
I live in the detroit area of michigan.

I think E85 is a corrosive poor-mans race gas with a lower energy-density per unit volume than a petroleum fuel. Not changing anything than his fuel, he will lose power. The upside to E85 is it's octane (low 100 range) that allows you to advance timing/ raise compression/ up the boost to get not only power back, but get a gain. With such a conservative setup, his money could be better spend elsewhere. BTW, not sure about MI, but in MN what is being sold as E85 is still closer to E70 (winter blend).
