What bike to start out with?

What bike to start out with?
So, I just signed up to get my motorcycle license. I've been looking for a long time at what type of bike I should get, and the general idea I get from everybody is to get something smaller and work your way up. I've been looking at a lot of bikes from the 250-750 cc range (I know it's big) and most of them were cruiser bikes, nothing sportier.
For all of you riders, what would be a good type of bike to look for? I am looking into a sport bike down the road, so do you think I should just get an older sport bike and just baby it for a while, or should I get a cruiser and just have fun. I'm not new to riding bikes as I have had a fair share of dirtbikes and what not. Thanks guys,
Colin

Go find yourself a used ninja 250. Thats what I have, perfect starter bike. They are light, quick, easy to handle, get great gas milage(about 60mpg), and the insurance is cheap as hell. I wanted a sport bike, but everyone that I taked to told me to stay away from 600cc bikes till I get some more experience on a smaller bike. I'm glad I listened, the 250 is very easy to controll, but unlike most other smaller bikes it can still keep up in traffic. I've had mine up to 105, thats as fast as they go, but I dont' need to go any faster on the street anyway. If you look around you can pick up a decent used one for around 1500-1700. I bought mine new last fall for 3000.

Yeah, I have dreamed of owning a busa or an R1 or something similar, but then I realize how crazy fast they are. I know I need something smaller, and a Ninja 250 sounds like a good option. Any other suggestions?
