no, not switching polarity as in AC/DC but as in Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN) and Direct Curent Electrode Positive (DCEP). Shielded gas uses DCEP and shielded wire uses DCEN.

no, because if you switch to the torch and take out the wire, its the same stuff.

I thought you used sheilding gas on both dcen and dcep? I'm totally confused now...

dcep is when the flow or direction of the arc goes from the work being welded to the electrode. dcep is used with stick welders. the electrode is going to be consumed on this setting.

dcen flows from the electode to the work being welded. best for when you want to weld with a non-consubable electrode like tig welding.

gas is just a way to shield like hotrex said. most migs can use co2
