VW guru's please step in....
ok, so there is this gal at work that has a 2000 Jetta VR6 that has some misc issues. minor issues IMO. such as...
busted sunroof
flat tire (running on a spare)
cracked windshield
140,000 miles
gets from point A to point B, but has some sort of engine issues, but does run and drive
questions that i have for the VW guys....
is the car worth the $500 she wants for me to fix up and resale? KBB says $4500 is market value on a car in "ok" condition in my area.
the minor stuff, like the sunroof, tire, and windshield isnt a problem for me, i know that ---- is cheap at the JY. what concerns me is the "drivability" of this car. how are the VR6 engines? are there any common issues that would cause the car to run funny? I have my fair share of engine swaps and engine fixes and such, so it doesnt bother me that the car runs funny. the question is though, with that engine, are parts expensive in general?

Timing chain is on the transmission side of the motor I believe fun fun. A friend had one and the sunroof was smashed by a rock on the highway and a new one was close to a grand. So one from the JY might not be as cheap as you expect.

$50 for just the glass
$100 for the whole assembly
i just went and drove the thing.
not a bad car at all.
nice leather interior, manual tranny, runs MUCH better then she thinks, smooth shifting tranny.
after my initial inspection, it only has a few minor parking lot dings, a headlight thats out, and a smashed sunroof.
as far as how the engine is, i didnt see, feel, hear, smell anything at all that would lead me to believe it was a junker.

just found out on friday that the "true" reason she is selling it is because of, IMHO, minor hail damage. However, the insurance company doesnt see my point of view as being minor. they actually totalled the car out.
thats why its $500
i am still considering buying it because the hail damage is easly fixed, along with the sunroof and windshield.
i know the engine has been replaced/rebuilt in the last 2 years by the VW dealership she bought it from. she bought a 3 year drivetrain warranty on a used VW and it worked out for her. the engine has less than 50k miles on it.
