yea unless you have 100 leechers and 2 seeders

That, and the RIAA/MPAA's refusal to cite ThePirateBay in their (MPAA, anyway) recent torrent site lawsuits speaks well for the longevity of the medium. I remember the big XDCC channels going *poof* after the big juarez crackdown 2 years back... which was okay because they were and are glitchy as hell. IRC is a great way to meet -----retentive music lovers and exchange Quality rips of esoterica in very high bitrate, but for anything else it is not worth the hassle.

buk, scattered between 100 leechers there are enough pieces to construct 5-12 complete files. That is the nature of a torrent, and the integrity of the system is assured.

400 mW wireless PCI card, good low-loss coax, and a 12-15 Db omni should set you back $125 or less if you shop around. If you live anywhere residential... lower middle class or an urban environment... you'll have 3-9 neighbors to steal wireless from. Welcome to my last two years... before that I had a pir9 Charter account (locally, they didn't disallow modem MAC IDs when terminating your account... they just disconnected the line. Hooking it back up = 4 years free cabel modem and extended basic for the roomies.)

Where do j00 shop? Brief netsearch hasn't pulled up 15db omni's for less than 120.

Just bought a laptop, if I'm going to be doing street tunearing, I wanna be able to wardrive too!

Some of the reputable manufacturers ebay their "seconds" that work fine, but are cosmetically challenged, in the $50-60 range. You REALLY need to search around on the WiFi forums for who makes decent stuff.

For wardriving, get the Senao 200 mW PCMCIA card w/ external antenna connection for teh win! Should run $70 or a smidge less shipped to the door, and is easily tweakable to 250 mW. Then go to Fleeman, Anderson, and Bird (fab-corp.com/.net/.something) and get the correct pigtail to adapt your WiFi card to your antenna. fab-corp will also have the #1 best wardriving antenna. It's only 5.5 Db gain, but has a proper ground plane and has a magnetic mount. Short, stubby thing, you'll find it on the netstumbler store, as well. I'd avoid a larger omni for wardriving.

Only 25-33% of APs have WEP setup, in my experience. 10-15% of those use default keys, so are a non-issue. Also, there are a lot of routers with internet access on lockdown, that you can still bomb into the router and use the router's default luser/pass to get in and allow access based on your card's MAC ID, or misc. Search "router default password list," you'll laugh.

The ratio of wireless routers to people that have a clue is about 15:1... I went thru all this with a neighbor at my last house (guy backed into my CRX then avoided me) where he knew at some point I was using his access and started trying to change router settings himself and couldn't quite figure out how to change the router default password The day before I moved out, I deleted his girlfriend's homework off her shared folder, and sent lemonparty.org to their networked printer. That is how you do it in the trailerpark, y0!
