Default turbos vs gas mileage? (DSM)

alright, i just bought this 91 laser rs turbo A/T. it's quick. My friend said he raced it back before i bought it and it ran a 17.3 . For some reason, i thought it could do 15's stock...? anyway, i'm not concerned with perf just yet, tho i am getting compliments from friends and basically anyone i give a ride to (except my friends that have to ride in the tiny *** backseats lol- suckers). So here's the problem- I have to drive 45 miles to work. so 90 miles round trip. I've done this 2wice so far. and with 180 miles on the trip, from a full tank, i'm down to a 1/4 tank. that's about 30 miles of interstate at 70-75 mph and then 15 miles of highways through small towns. when i'm in town, i drive with a really light foot too. why am i getting such bad gas mileage?!
when i'm not accelerating, my boost gauge (aftermarket, on A-pillar pod) reads -10. so thats like a vacuum, and thats gotta be bad for perf and gas mileage, right? the car is completely stock other than that boost gauge. I was wondering if i put in a manual boost controller, would it help/hurt MPG at all?
also- if i remove the cat, will my idiot light go on? aka is there an oxygen sensor or something behind it that will get the wrong reading? (as was the case in my friends 98 S10)
maybe i'm driving it it wrong...? am i supposed to take it into boost everytime i start? idk...i'm new to turbos and all..thanks for any help
