Turbo neon for projects page. 56k- i can't believe there's still people on that!
ok here's my post for the turbo projects section, meant to write this up about a year ago but never got around to it until now.
Some of you have seen this before, but I'm sure there's some new ones here that haven't.
Specs:
1996 dodge neon SOHC
mods:
log manifold ceramic coated
ebay special t3 .60/.48 turbo internally gated to 5psi
manual boost controller set to 10psi
turbo xs rfl bov
johhny race car 6" intercooler
custom 2" welded charge piping
55mm bored throttle body
30# ford motorsport injectors
255lph walbro fuel pump with modified fuel canister
lorenzo billet fuel rail tapped for fuel gauge
begi rising rate regulator
magnum valvesprings in otherwise stock head
2.5" downpipe to full 2.5" exhaust
Solid side, tranny and rear motor mounts
Autometer rice boy 5" tach and boost gauge with a-pillar pod
B&M short shifter with solid shifter bushings
SPEC stage 3 clutch
phantom grip limited slip differential
Now on to the pics and the story of the build-up:
At first I had this thing built natually aspirated, went OK, ran 15.1 with the throttle body, long tube header and exhaust, and underdrive pulley. but before I got too far with that, I realized that if I wanted to make any kind of real power I'd have to go turbo, so I got on here.
This is what I started with originally
I ripped out all that uneccesary crap like smog stuff and the like. and then pulled the motor
I didn't like how the engine bay looked so I spent a bit of time cleaning it all up. Now a year later it looks like crap again from driving it all winter
Here's a bunch of the parts I had together
I don't have pictures of it, but I tore the head off to put in the new valvesprings (valve float to destruction in another car I had has taught me to be cautious)
While I was at it I put on a new MLS headgasket, then I put on all the parts I needed before I dropped the engine back in. Don't make fun of my painted intake manifold, I was really happy with the way that turned out.
Then I tossed it back in the car, in these you can see my fuel rail and gauge, pretty nice pieces. you can also see my solid passenger mount, custom made for me by my brother out of aluminum in his machine shop, the trans mount is just as solid, as well as the solid bobble strut you saw in the parts round-up picture.
Then I installed the rising rate regulator
and got all the fuel lines routed
Then I installed the limited slip in my tranny, got really pissed because the case halve dowels refused to line up properly so I decided to take a break and install my clutch, this thing is pimp, grips like crazy- matched up with the limited slip, the torque steer is gone and this thing just rips forward.
I installed the trans next, really should have dropped it in with the motor, trying to wedge it in from the bottom the stupid k-member sucked badly.
Next I installed the gauges inside
then I started mocking up the intercooler and charge piping, cut and welded it, then had the painter at my dealership paint them- don't rag on my color, I should have gone flat black.
Ok so I got that all together and got a few shots of my car out in the driveway, a couple points of note: Yes my car looks like a 4x4- this was before I got my springs in, secondly; no, the hood did not close completely in this configuration, those wood block spacers were temporary. I had to cut some bracing from the underside of the hood and it fit just fine. I also got a couple of shots next to my dad's neon, they're almost identical except his is stock.
My goofy looking self not wearing shoes.
This setup ran pretty good- was fun for awhile, but as you guys already know, tuning with a rrfpr sucks the big one. I was never happy with how smooth it ran. Ran this for about a year, then got sick of it, took it all apart and sold most of it off. the only things I've got left are the throttle body and valvesprings and solid shifter bushings. I was going to sell it when I got my super duty, but to tell you the truth, I'm a car guy at heart, I think I'm going to get rid of the truck and build this car up again. However this time I'm going to go a slightly different route:
I got this in last friday, but as some of you may know, they don't make a supercharger setup for a neon, so I'm going to have to custom weld and aluminum plenum together to mount it, and I'll have to lose my power steering again. oh well I've also got a crane 14 cam in the mail along with my SRT 40# injectors. This time though I'm going megasquirt, so it'll actually run right. I'm going to get the 2.75" pulley for this supercharger, hopefully run around 13-15psi. I'm going to top it off with a direct port nitrous kit to really get it going.
Anyway I'm going to keep you guys updated on how that's going. hopefully there'll be a lot less plumbing and such things on this build. That kit was the first one that I had made and to be honest, there were a lot of things that I should have done differently. but that's hindsight for ya.
Let me know whatcha think.

Looks like a solid setup. You ever dyno that thing? The fact you have gone to a supercharger is really disapointing but none the less nice HMT kit.

well boost one way or another is still boost, but i bet turbo and megasquirt would have gotten the job done just fine, be sure to keep us posted on adapting that blower

Anyway I was thinking of twin turboing it with nitrous, but then I decided that would be way too gay.
haha :P
