Default Thoughts on the early/mid 80s GTI/Rabbits...

well since my Integra's 11:1 motor is now finally done I'm thinking of keeping the teg as a daily driver and getting something else to tinker on in the background. my friends dad is selling a mid 1980s GTI Rabbit, 5spd...I fell in love with the car last summer when I heped him install a starter. its a sweet old school type of car, definently has potential to become a road race monster. the damn thing could rev all the way out to 6.5-7k, pretty impressive for an old school car. his son has had the car since and tore it up ...minor damage to the door and the motor is leaking all kinds of nasty crap. but I'm pretty sure a rebuild would be pretty simple or even a motor swap. he bought the car for $500 waaaaaaay back in the day and if its in worse shape now, than I could probably get it for $250 or maybe even free since he knows I'd take good care of it and could whip it back into shape.

any of you have experience with these older VW GTI/Rabbits?? I heard you can put ANY VW motor into these things, is that true? what are the options for turbocharging the older motors? I plan to do some research myself, but if any of yall have some pointers, SHOOT....

(this isn't the car, its red and black)

Go hit up vwvortex.com It's like the HT of VW site. Shitloads of Info and they break the forums down into really specific catagories. Those Rabbits have shitloads of parts for them being such a popular car. If you can get it for 250 or under get and go to town on it.

those old rabbits are insane.. I wouldnt say its a very ideal road race car.. when ever I see them at the events the never run top times and they have this nasty habbit of being really easy to put on 3 tires around a tight angle.

yeah, I'm skimming VW vortex right now...seems like you can pretty much stuff any motor into this thing..1.8T, VR6, etc. of course wiring and all aside it looks like cake.

I'm starting to think the one he has is a late 80s or 1990 or so model since I now remember it having the dohc 16valve motor and round headlights. as for why such an old one...I just love simple looking older cars, no crazy curves or body lines, just simple...this one is nice too....

Simple, lightweight machine... go for it.

Swap a 1.8t or new 2.0t with all necessary wiring and you're good to go. MK1 gti/rabbits are cooler in my mind, the mkII was a little to 1980s for me. the round light is usually a conversion if it is a 90, since most MKIIs had rectangular lights (I'm pretty sure). I had a 1983 Jetta GLI (first fuel injected), it was a wiring nightmare and I sold it before ever driving it, looked sweet though.
