i worked flatrate once. when its busy, the money is good, but when its slow it sucks. i like the security of my same paycheck every week, even if its less than it could be on flatrate. i have been offered quite a few jobs on flatrate and i always turn them down

It depends alot on dispatch. Dispatch is what we call the guy or guys that handout the work. He can give you easy jobs that will pay you good or difficult jobs that only pay warrenty time or an electrical issue that is difficult to diagnose. I make my money no matter what he gives me because I'm fairly quick and good with diagnostics. If your a body man, I imagine that some cars would be easier to work on than others as far as the type of work that needs to be performed. All this does not mean anything if business is slow and the cars are just not in the shop for you to make your money on. I think most do prefer the guarantee of the hourly or the salary pay rather than the crap shoot that is flatrate.

flat rate is great if your quick but have good quality work. on the repair order it will say how much time you have. that is the time you get paid for. if you take longer then the time stated, you lose money, if you do it in half the time, you still get paid the full time.
example, do a 4 hour job in 2 hours.... you get paid 4 hours.
if you good you can work a 40 hr work week and get paid for 60 hrs....

flatrate works for me. just gotta be efficient, work smart, and work hard. i've been averaging bout 50hrs per week, w/ 1 hoist, 1 flat.........AND have only been at this place for 1.5-2mo.
you gotta work hard, FIND some work to sell, dont count on your advisors to keep you busy or you'll end up being the one getting all the warranty/recall bullshit. i like to give every car i touch a "shakedown", find what else is wrong w/ it, there's a 50/50 chance you can get more work..........wont know unless you try.
there may be times when work is slow, but if your at a good shop there will be more good weeks than bad.......and when the work isn't there, neither am i .................. i gots ---- to do bitch
