If the tranny are out, just hold the starter against the flywheel and crank it.

or you can do what junk yards do ... just put a impact gone on the harmonic balancer and sompression check it that way

on easy thing is to pull the valve cover off and check out the valvetrain to see if it is clean or burnt, sludge, etc.
you can pull the plugs also to check them.
