Default Subaru WRX STi

Last night my wife and I went out to eat.(the local "authentic mexican restraunt", thought you mexicans would appreicate that.- helped one more fund there family getting here) Anyways, As we were walking into the place I saw a STi. I have seen these before, but this one really cought my eye. Then he pulled out, and I did my usuall, "shut up, listen to the turbo" and what happened, this ****** sounded like a dam V-8 takin off like a rocket, this thing sounded INSANE! squeeled the AWD into 3rd gear, I was in awe amazement. ( I know this thing was highly mod'd)

Its another boring day at "work"...
So this brings me into my subject. I haven't really read anything on these, except how its compared to the EVO pretty evenly. Both "race cars from the dealer" there really are no differences as far as performance. Has anyone checked one of these things out? I looked at one on the sales floor, but thats about as far as ive gotten.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...sub/index.html
Motor Trend speaks highly of it, just as I think highly of it. I just have over looked it, and I think I am gonna try to re-search it a little more. I dream of owning a EVO but I
think this will be in my dreams also....

Anyone seen any performance parts for these things, and don't they have a boxer engine? I am a little confused on that. They also have some kind of valve timing which I dont understand, is it like a VTEC or something?

I would like to have your guys input, hear other opinions. One day I'm either gonna buy one of these or an evo. Once I buy my house, the next thing up will be one of these...

was it blue? there's a couple of them running around town, but the blue one that i've seen around was definitely not stock, i would like to talk to him and get him to take me for a ride, i've never rode in one either. i was planning on getting one when the si is paid off (about a year and half), but i decided to get a nice crew cab f-250 powerstroke instead

yeah, blue, gold wheels (they all have gold wheels from what im gathering) but it looks stock, but it sounds sooo mean.

have you seen that silver EVO at the mitsu dealer...

i have liked the fact that you can get a evo or sti for about $26,500 from what egay shows...wait another 2 years, and i think 17-20K will be average.

ohh and on the diesel, my father-in-law has a black F-250, crew cab, 4X4, full leather, everything. When I go home for christmas, we are putting a full banks upgrade, and a propane injection on it. its gonna be soo sexy.

yeah I know the feeling of seeing an STI. On my way back home from Akron I saw a Subaru car lot on my right and saw the front row filled with STI. You can't miss it with those big *** Wings they got. I've only seen One STI around here sounds ------- nice too! I wan't to test drive one but here they won't let you unless they know you were going to buy one There is a dude at my job who has an EVO though. I see it everyday silver too.

There's one crazy STi here.
Full roll cage and racing seats/harnesses, MoTeC engine management with anti-lag, huge intercooler and some other nice details.
It was last dynoed 530 ish horsepower, and it ran a best of 10.80 @ 131mph spinning a lot in first and second gear, blew the transmission up that day.

I'm a WRX owner, the Sti was a little too much for me. I own a 2002 WRX. Nice car, great for mods, but definately not an STi.

The problem with the Sti is that the engine we get in the US ej25, on the STi is only US-spec. and the ECU has not been cracked as of right now, even though it is almost cracked. The engine has not seen as much aftermarket research as the ej20, or the one in my WRX, which is the same they use for the EDM and JDM STi versions, but with a more agressive tune and bigger intercooler and turbo.

Like they said before, if you have the money for standalone engine management, motec, the possibilities are endless. Also they don't have the week tranny the regular WRX has, plus all the suspension upgrades it's definately worth the extra cash.

Now I got my 2002 for 18,000 with only 23k miles, last december. With about $1,500 of mods it has ran a best of 13.9@98mph. Good enough for me, I have seen STi with the same mods run around the same or worse, and some better of course. That time was before a EBC, greddy profec b spec II, so I'm hoping for a better time when I go to the track again.

As far as what's better, EVO or STi, I think the EVO is better. I'm a Sube fan, but you have to admit the 4g63 has seen plenty of development and torture over the years, people now what works and they can be faster really easy. The Sube STi engine, as I said before, is fairly new so companies are still trying to learn what's best for it.

Out of the box they are both as good, but after that I think the EVO as of right now, has more potential.

---- that was long!!!!!

the guy i work for have one and i get to drive it every once a while.
it is a really nice car..got some speed, and IMO way better designed all around compare to the EVO. but the EVO got a lot of aftermarket parts in supply = more potential as Davcivic said.

yeah the evo has more potential and more aftermarket parts. But i would rather have the STI. It starts with having more power and with a little work and more aftermarket parts I bet people would change there mine about going for an EVO instead of the STI

davcivic. that was some great info. do you think that once the ECU is able to be hacked, do you think the engine will come alive? Kinda like the new Si sucks, but when you get a JDM ECU,it becomes a totally different car?

That was some good info and makes alot of sense. I totally understand where you are comming from.
-SO whats up with the boxer engine/varable valve timing. I knew it had the beafier suspension, and the 6 speed tranny, both I have read/been told about, but I think alot of people might be interested. Please elaborate.

What websites/forums do you look at for performance for Subaru? The only thing I have found...

All Subes have boxer engines nowadays, or the called them h4 or h6 for the horizontal position of the cylinders. That's waht give them the unusual but sweet sound, mine also sounds like a mean V8, still being a 2.0 4 cylinder. They both have a variable valve timing system, and when that subevtec , kicks in the car is amazingly quicker, you can feel it just like a Honda.

In the regular WRX an ECU reflash will give you anywhere from 30 to 50 WHP, combined with another 30 to 50 from a complete turboback, and the car comes alive like a mother. I have the turboback(downpipe/catback) and the upipe, connects the headers to the turbo, eliminating the 3 cats and the car came alive. I'm saving up for a good management system.

Companies like COBB, Turbo XS & Perrin are the leaders in WRX tuning.
I also go to www.wrxfanatics.com for a lot of info. Now be aware that a lot of owners, excuse me if you get ofended, are little rich white boys that don't know ---- about cars and have the many to pay for all the mods and would rather buy stage kits than do the work themselves and pay out their *** for brand names. But once you get the info you want, you can go from there and get what you need. I do believe the STi in a few more years will get the research and development neccesary to be a better car, and I can bet you that in 5 years the Subaru is going to be worth more money than the Mitsubishi.

I have learned a lot in the last few months about what works in the Sube and what doesn't, In my opinion it is a much nicer car than a Lancer, think about it is just a Mirage, is like the SRT4 it is still a Neon in my opinion. The Impreza has always been a sportier car, thin of the 2.5rs and now the WRX and STi.
