sr20de build...stock head limits?
Ive decided to drop some more money into my car, instead of getting another civic. Im picking up a spare motor sometime this week. I am planning on using forged rods and pistons/ HG/ arp studs, but am unsure what to do with the head. They rev stock to around 7600 rpms. Im shooting for about 350 crank hp. In a daily driven / weekend track setup. Do i need any head work? or will the stock head support the power? or am i better off trying to find a sr20det head?
i know there are a few nissan guys on here.
Thanks for your help.

for the head you will be cutting i close... but it should be fine... my srde i had wasnt comeing close to 250 more less 350 but i have heard of many people putting the det setup on a de head and not haveing any trouble...
there isnt much difference if any... between the two... im sure cams are different... but there is a better site to ask that question to and its ... www.zeroyon.com
those are all a bunch of nissan fans who still live in okinawa japan... there a bunch of soldiers stationed over there... junkyard racer can back me up on the fact that they know what they are talking about... dont tell them i sent you cause they will just ask if i used spell check when i told you about it...hahahaha

Re: sr20de build...stock head limits?
if you are going to be revving it, i suggest some rocker arm stoppers as they fling the rockers arms off like a bitch if you over rev them and ---- everything up,
apparantly the CA18DET springs are a good upgrade, dunno if you's get that motor over there,
SR20DET head will probably have the VVC system, which i dunno if the DE's have, its ---- anyway,
when rebuilding it, make sure you set the clearances properly, as 1 rocker supplies 2 valves with lift, so if they are not shimmed correctly one valve will recieve more lift earlier and wear the rocker un-evenly
best option would be to fit the whole DET engine and be done with ------- around with N/A

Stock DE's can handle 400 whp worth of turbocharged goodness.
Brace yourself for hot, tasty transmission death at 250 whp. B15 and P11 LSD gearboxes are an upgrade but $$$ if you can find them, be prepared to stick your classic SE-R LSD into a non-LSD unit if you wish to rock out with your **** out.

Or you can send your tranny case out to get it welded at JGY and you should be good. I'd just keep the head thats on there since there isn't really much of a difference in the fwd sr20de/det heads or block(just pistons/rods and I think the DET has oil squirters). You could get a SR20VE which are really nice and have come down in price from they started coming over. Why not get pistons and rods from a GTIR. Cheap upgrade and they are really nice stuff as the pistons will drop you down to a CR of 8.3 and they have 440cc injectors. You could swap a GTIR head onto it and have the sodium filled valves and the ITB's not to mention the better cams. That I know Frank can get you since I almost had him pull the T28 that was on it. I don't see barely any if any at all FWD nissan stuff. Mostly just silvia and skyline ---- which will serve you no purpose. You can't even use the RWD DET head since their setup with coilpack and no dizzy and ---- like that and you'd have to run that ecu somehow and I'm gonna stop talking cause it's not even something to think about at all. But ask Frank about the RNN14 stuff as that would be your best bet. Oh there's also a FWD sr20de that came with roller rockers that flows really nice and you won't have to worry about shooting of rocker arms. I'd say just get the FWD DET turbo setup like the manifold, turbo, injectors and just tune it with a SAFC and you should be off to a pretty good start. Some FWD DET's came with Ball bearing turbos also but are pretty hard to find. The S15 came with a really nice garrett ball bearing turbo but is $$. Whew!

Seriously, the stock engine is fine for a stinkload of power. It's the transmission you worry about.
Only thing about the GTi-R that is remotely worthy is it's ability to use cheap and readily available top feed injectors; the rest of the Nissan stuff is homo side feed.

Re: sr20de build...stock head limits?
-Only thing I remembered about the tranny was the cracking case and the 5th gear popout.
-Yes the GTIR head has circular CC as where the other heads were more almost rectangular and then round on the edges between the CC. Thats with the drop of CC also comes in play
-Doing a headswap isn't all that important but a the cams are a nice upgrade over the stock DE sticks.
-I just a SAFC cause it's cheap and simple and get the job done. The exhaust manifold from the GTIR is a very nice unit and the T28 that comes with it too.

Re: sr20de build...stock head limits?
Not partially, the CR drop is exclusively the GTi-R head. DE cams are an upgrade from DET, and with those engines having a good cam profile to begin with advocating the expense and hassle of a cam (head, actually) swap makes zero sense, especially with one of the ****** *** T25s or T28s that cripple those engines and keep them slow homosexual Hypewagons. All any SR20 needs to make enough power to blast the FWD trannies to flinders is a MAN sized turbo and someone with scrotal fortitude cranking on the boost controller.
