Re: so i went to uti open house
I only know of one person who has went through the UTI program, he was one of my best friends in highschool, he went to arizona for the 2yr program. Anyhow, the plan was when he came back from school he was going to be a tech at our dealership with me. Well he came back to WA and oddly he got a job offer from another dealership but not as a technican... insted he got a job as a Service Writter, he is doing very well, makes alot more money than I do. He works at a Lexus dealership, doesnt even get his hands dirty, but I'm sure he has to handle lots of heat. I would never want that job.
I honestly think going to a automotive school is a bit of a waste. Sure you learn alot, but alot of these big automotive schools are just feeding you bullshit info, technicans dont make lots of money like they say they do. I just could never justify spending money to learn on how to work on cars. ----, you spend enough money just buying tools.
Maybe I just feel this way because I was pretty lucky on how I got started. In-house training is where its at. You learn just about everything. I suggest if someone is interested in being a tech to check out local dealerships and talk to the service manager to see if they offer any programs.

from what i've heard, the only difference between UTI and comunity college is the time. CC will take you about 2 years to get all ur ASE ----, and UTI takes like 6-22 weeks or somethin like that

do any of you think it helps to have UTI behind your name when applying or would simply being ASE cert with some CC classes behind you be just as well?? The AT courses I've taken at my CC are pretty in depth and taught very well and they can get you your certs too.

skinnye, if you couldn't tell from my story, my friend got stiffed out of all the "easy jobs with good credit hours" by the senior techs. I would imagine your first years would be this way anywhere you went.

i have a feeling schools value depends alot on where you go. Yeah i had some automotive knowledge but driveability was way outa my grasp, for me community college automotive program has been really good. after the fact i feel is up to you, tool boxs have wheels on them for a reason.
