Default RIP Northfork, thanks HMT!

People always look down on four-wheelers and try to shut all the trails down. Garbage has long been one of their complaints. It's one thing to go field----- a vehicle, it's another when you don't bring it home.

I thought jeff did that ---- in a rock quarry?

Anwaysy, if that's true, he needs to read his own post. The article doesn't discuss garbage, it discusses the effects of the wear and erosion on the land by OHV use.

Myself I am involved with several off-road organizations, including the Pacific NW 4wd Association, UROC, various local clubs, tillamook state forest, and on.

Right now we're fighting the same sort of issues. The forestry service has shut down a ton of trails in the Tillamook Forest. Most of the reasoning for this is just like the article says.

Ecology water quality engineer Jerry Shervey said problems occur when vehicles drive downhill into streams, creating ruts that send sediment into the water.

The sediment travels downstream, covering areas where threatened chinook salmon and other fish try to spawn.

As the article says, the major reasons for the shut down is the negative effect of sediment in the waterways. From what the article says, the trails being used aren't even trails that have been built and plotted out and accepted as forestry OHV trails, they are just ones your basic group of wheelers has made themselves. That's definitely not the way to go about things.\

In Oregon OHV areas, we spend every month in meetings with the local forestry reps, talking about what we can do to help. Our area is mostly wheeled only in areas that are accepted forestry trails, they are marked, maintained, and closed as necessary. When a trail deteriorates to a point it shouldnt be used, it is closed, and clubs and forestry workers work together to rebuild the area and make it useable before it is re-opened. We also work in trail patrols to help catch people doing ---- they shouldn't, like using closed trails, and tossing beercans and wrappers out their windows.

Alot of the problem seems like a strong lack of involvement by the WA state 4wd community. A forest is a big place for the forest service to maintain like that on their own.

terry cry me a river you big puss :P

It's safer having my van off the streets, young girls were getting raped in that thing along with several drug deals going down. It's better having it out in the middle of nowhere. and dont worry I drained 50% of the fluids before we destroyed it. I'm just glad we got to demolish the van before the ban hahaha.

lmao, this reminded me of something i read on a mudding website so i looked and looked and looked and found the quote

How Mudding Improves the Environment!!
As swamps age, the vegetation on the surface constantly eats away at the vital nutrients and minerals that are contained in the upper level of the soil. Unless there are mudding trucks, once these nutrients are gone, the ecosystem will die. You see, mudding can reverese this process by churning the soil. Big mud tires drag the vegetation down in to the soil where it can decay and become fertile ground for new growth. Also at the same time, mud tires bring up fertile new soil from the depths of the swamp and ------ it evenly over the surface, An excellent byproduct of soil churning is tire ruts. These depressions create an excellent place for water to gather, making them a sanctuary for frogs, their young, birds, and a watering hole for larger animals such as deer. This is why mudding is so vital to the swamp lands of the world.
i know it says trucks.. but yeah.. atv's can squeeze by too :P

seriously now
IMO

all the mudding trails here in michigan have a maximal decibal as to how loud the exhast can be.

and there not just inconsiderate bastards. the decibal limit differs from make/model/displacement and what not

so they take lots of ---- into consideration. i was suprised that when they banned snowmobiles in yosemitee people didnt make a bigger comotion than they did, i havent even heard anyone mention the ban.. is it still on?

snowmobilng and atvs are fun. but why dont they just ------- put a quiet exhaust on them bitches? im sure there is someway they can do it.

*edit* my bad, i missunderstood the article, but the noise issue is one of the reasons they wanted to ban them in maine

*edit #2* website that knows wtf im talking bout incase all of yall dont :P http://www.nonoise.org/news/snow.htm
