Well, it's really up to you. Are you building manifolds? Building structures?

Most commonly, a TIG (Tungston Inert Gas) welder is used for aluminum. You get a nice looking, and clean weld. TIG welders are expensive though. You can MIG (Metal Inert Gas) weld aluminum, however you'll need gas and aluminum wire, which can get spendy.

For 1/8" mild steel, I use a MIG, because that's all I have at home. When I need to make nice looking welds, or am doing stainless/aluminum, I go to work and use a TIG.

If you were unaware of what family of welders to use on Aluminum and steel, then I think you need to do a little more research b4 you go buy a welder.

This is a decent book for a very broad overview of the different welding procedures. I have it and have read it a few times: Welders Handbook
