basically you need to strip it, i then sand it with a green scrubby dish bad, after that 400 grit, 600 grit, 800 grit, then 1000 grit, after you get that far put a little polish on it and buff it and see what areas need more work, fix the problem areas then go over it with 1500 grit, then 2000 grit, polish again with a buffer or to it by hand.
The most important thing is to sand in one direction, dont do it in circles dont do it up and down in some spots then side to side in others, do it in one direction and stick to it.

amen to that. And plus polish always fades and oxidizes. I polished my compressor housings and now I'll never polish anything again.

Re:Polished Valve cover
yeah i have polished allot of ----..
1. it takes allot of matrials
(1x 3" hookit disk, 1box of 600grit hookit paper, 1200grit, a dremal, buffing wheel and finish with braso or red rouge, and lots and lots of time drill or air grinder)
2 it takes allot of time to get mirror finish
3 it scratchs real easy. ( clear coat turns yellow)
its just easier to have paints stripped and clear all the rough spots and have it chromed ( chrome holds allot of heat)
just buy one. cheaper and less effort.
things i have polished
D16y8 valve cover
3tc Vavle cover
vq30de intake manifold
ohh. and matching pair Clarion 400.2 amps.
only reason you would hand polish anything is for ONE of ----..other wise buy it.

Re:Polished Valve cover
on my d series motor I took the valve cover to truck stop that polishes truck rims for those 18 wheelers and got it polished for $20.
on my b16 I trip the paint with some acid type paint remover, and uses a flap type sanding wheel to get it smooth, then I use a copper wire wheel, on a air grinder, and after all that some metal polish and hand polish it. it was a lot of work and the paint stripper burns like acid.
