There is truth to some of that statement, its all in how good of a shot you are, how many times you can shoot off your gun, and where the bullet enters, what type of ammo are you using, FMJ, hollow point, wadcutter, etc. But steve, if youre looking for a good home defense gun that wont blow through the wall and shoot your son ( .45 :P ) i would recomend a shot gun with buckshot, in a home shootout theres no gun i'd rather have than a shotty, hands ------ down, oh yeah, try www.gunbroker.com its a gun auction site, they'll have anything you want there

I do have kids, so having a safetyless gun around isn't an option. All I really want is something small, something that weighs nothing, and it has to mow a crowd down in a heartbeat.

Oh yeah, so of course I'll get a kick out of shooting at the range, but I can't say shooting is going to be my new favorite hobby. Is it ever an ok idea to buy used handguns? If so, where? Thanks.
9mm are a hell of a lot cheaper than .40 (also known as 40 S&W), but balistically speaking their are quite a few people (me among them) that claim a .40 is ballistically superior to both a 9mm and a .45. Think of it as a round that's as accurate as a 9mm despite it larger size, but causes almost as much damage as a .45 due to the fact that's it's a more energetic load and the hollow point .40's balloon to nearly the same size as a .45 (the FMJ .40s also penetrate farther than a .45). So, basically by switching loads, you can get the penetration and accuracy of a 9mm (by using FMJs) or the big ------- holes like a .45 (by using HPs). That being said, they cost 4-5 times as much per round as 9mm ammo (if I remember correctly). When you multiply that by the amount of rounds YOU SHOULD be firing at the range for practice. You'll be ------- broke! hehehe

Seriously, I'd go with a 9mm. If you later decide it's not enough mayhem for you, you can always buy a .45Magnum as your second gun. Never underestimate the power of a good revolver.

It's most definately a good option to get a used gun, you just have to find a dealer you trust, or you can make arrangements (many will) to have it looked at by a gunsmith, and have a "no questions asked" return policy if the smithy says it no good. Another really good option is to go through www.gunbroker.com. There are a LOT of honest and reliable dealers on there, AND you can use the option of having them ship it to a smith who also has an FFL (firearms dealer's license) and he can then inspect it for you, and if it's not up to snuf, send it back to the dealer without the gun ever coming into your possesion. You will most likely have to pay shipping and smiths handling fee, but it's worth it, and most likely there won't be a damn thing wrong with the gun. Handguns are VERY reliable when properly maintaned and any smith can tell you if even the slightest thing is wrong with the gun.

Oh, and as far as the kiddos go, there's really only 2 good options. A trigger lock, or educating your kids. The second is by far the safest way to go. You'd be surprised how much proper fear and respect a kid can have when they're properly taught, rather than being left "curious" about guns. Until then, PLEASE, buy a trigger lock (they're cheap and most guns come with one) and keep it locked whenever it's out of your sight.

God, I should really learn to shut up some day. Oh well, that ain't today! LOL

id rather have a pistol than a shotgun inside a house, takes too long and too much movement to aim a shotgun, short barrelled shotguns are illegal also....

youre trippin if you would chose a pistol over a shotty in a sub 15 yard fire fight. with ashotty you could just put it around a corner and point in the GENERAL area of the person and have a very good chance of hitting them, its like chosing a 22 over a 50cal in a sniper battle, and if you DO want bullets that go through things you can always pack a slug, a slug anywhere in the body will result in bleeding to death MUCH easier than a regular pistol, except for a 454 44cal or a 50 cal, personally i cant shoot those guns because i have girly wrists and the recol nearly snaps them
