Jake brakes are something different, pneumatic operation of valves to use the engine as a brake.

The cheapest retarder's I've found are in the $550 range and look dirty and abused. Meh.

You do realise that a load cell is typically cheaper than a good transducer? I picked up a 1000lb S-beam load cell for $43 to the door.

i'm not sure which diesel engine brake it is, but im thinking of one that double duties one of the valves in the cyl to pump air into itself. or pump air into it on an exhaust stroke, i dont remember

Hey, you just asked how a linear transducer could be used for a dyno...not logicabilities.
