Long story short, this guy had ask me if I wanted to work for him years back then when I was working in a car rental. He`s one of the regular customer who needs a car for business trips and so on. It`s like 3 years ago, after i quit that place he actually keeps on going back and ask my boss and friends for my #.
Recently my ex-boss call me up again, he said this guy talked to him and said there is a oppontity I might be interested in. I called him up. relized he actually operates a Fiber optic company and it`s pretty famous internationally. After all these talk he wanted me to be trained for the first year then become one of the sales man. (I am getting paid while I am getting trained.)

He wanted me to sign a contract that I am not allowed to disclose any business secreat, which is understandable, BUT
he also wanted me to sign a contract, that I must stay in the company for at least 8 years. Reason is that it costs a lot to train someone and he don`t want to see me leaving the company after I learn enough. doesn`t it sound a LITTLE weired?

I wouldnt sign a contract like that..There's no way to tell what the next 8 years will bring..thats like predicting the future n ----...i wouldnt dedicate 8 years to something with no chance of possibly being able to change..what if something comes along better and you cant touch it? cuz its a "breach of contract"

think of it this way, it'll secure you a job for 8 years. :P if he fires you, breach of contract for him... unless of course he has it in fine print that he could fire you at anytime penalty free.

He can still fire you even if you sign. Read the contract. He wouldn't be in breach. He is just trying to limit you from working for a competing company. He can't legally bind you to work there really. You can get "FIRED" any time you want.

That's probebly all it is. He dosen't want to train you and then you build up a clientell and decide to just over to a competior and start takeing his business. I bet if you quit before the 8 years you just can't work for another company doing a substansialy similer job, or disclose how things were done at his company.

Can you negotiate with him at all on the contract? Maybe setup some ground rules, define what a breach is? If he wants you this bad, use it to your advantage and get what you want out of the deal. I understand where he is coming from, but set some rules up so if he breaks them, you're out.
