I haven't checked prices in a while but you could probably build an SLI machine for what you are planning to spend.
Here's what I would recommend
Processor: AMD
Motherboard: ASUS, SOYO, ABT, MSI All make graet boards. Research and decide what features you want.
Hard Drive: SATA all the way. At least for your OS and most frequently accessed programs. I'm a Seagate fan. All the major brands are good.
Optical Drive: Dual layer DVD burners are so cheap now that there is no reason not to get one when you build a computer. They're pretty much all the same but I tend to stick with Sony.
Video Card: I am sure someone will correct me, but try to match the chipset on the video card to the MB chipset. VIA=VIA NVidia=NVida Lots of peop;e ;ove the ATI cards.
Sound Card: I'd only get this if you are serious about soun quality and/or into sound editing. M-Audio makes excellent quality cards.
Memory: Man unless you do alot of intense gaming or this is going to be a server there is no reason to have 2 gigs worth. Get the best quality you can afford. The MB manufacturer will have a list of memory that has been tested and works well.
www.zipzoomfly.com Awesome prices and free shipping.
www.tigerdirect.com The old standby.
www.frozencpu.com For your ricer case mods and liquid cooling needs.

i always buy from www.NCIX.com they are fast, only screwed up slightly on 1 out of atleast 25 orders and if they are not the cheapest they will price match.
spend money on a case, dont go cheap w/ a $40 case, a bad power supply will take out alot of crap and you wont be covered under warranty.
give me 5 min, i'll piece one together for you...
here's mine, just installed a thermalright xp-120 w/ a nexus fan (i'm into silent computing, my CRT is louder than my pc, no joke).
