if the pump and light turn off before start-up then it starts up for sec. then dies look at the relay.
Make sure you are getting a signal from the dizzy to the relay.
If you put in a resistor box in make sure all your connections are good.
Or get a relay diagram energize the circuits using a 9-volt batt. and check for continuity in the circuits that are suppose to have continuity.
w/o 9-volt there will be other circuit with continuity and the previous circuit will be open.
Or find another relay out of scrap car.
I usually have 3-4 laying around just in case somebody needs one.
I usually get them for $5.00 or less from junkyards.

You either have a main relay problem, or a coil or ignitor problem.
The main relay is switched by the ECU to control the fuel pump. The ignitor is switched by the ECU to control the coil. They are both just big switches to isolate the ECU from having to handle big currents. The coil... well, if you don't know what the coil does I can't help you :P
When the car doesn't start you need to figure out if it's lost fuel or fire. Usually pretty easy if you smell fuel... but you need to verify it has spark as some distributor pickup/wiring/ECU/ground issues will cause those problems too.
