Re: looking to get in the rc market
I personally owned about 10 high end cars and trucks. Personally on a small budget anything HPI is great. The 1/10th scale cars and trucks from HPI, plus the parts...Anyhow trust me on this.
Modded out HPI 1/10th scale
Now if you wanna get into 1/8th scale onroad cars the check out Serpent..
My very favorite of all was my 1/5th scale FG onroad. Full disk breaks, RWD, tons of ----. 2 stroke.

Re: looking to get in the rc market
I've had a ton of these things as well, had every kind of platform there is except for 1/8 on road.
My favorite platform is prolly 1/10 Stadium truck or 1/8 Buggy. The monster trucks are fun too but they go through so many parts it's ridiculous. I've got a T-Maxx that probably has more invested in it than my CRX and it still doesn't run right....but when it does it's a blast.
Something else you may want to consider is look for local tracks or possible places to use them. Construction sites, strip mall parking lots at night, etc are all good places to go.
As far as brands go, don't buy any of that no name ---- off eBay. Go to www.towerhobbies.com and sign up for their newsletter, a lot of times they've got really good deals going on.

Re: looking to get in the rc market
I'd go with a truck, with the biggest motor option you can fit on to it. I have a 1/10th scale HPI rs4 racer 2. Like someone else said before me, they get boring quickly because they just go fast back and forth. I suppose it would be more fun to race on a track or against some buddies, but I never got the opportunity. I would have liked to climb over grass and curbs and what not, it would be plenty fun racing in dirt. just my opinion

Re: looking to get in the rc market
Been racing off and on since 1988. Raced mostly electric, but do pit at some of the larger nitro regionals for some trackside friends.
What do you want to do?? Race or Bash?
If your bashing stick with a Traxxas Revo, it will give you good speed and lots and lots of aftermarket support. If you would like to step up and race it, then it will be easy for you to find someone else with a Revo willing to share set ups with.
If you are racing....then thats a different story. You pretty much have a major choice...off or on-road, off road tends to be slower paced and the car will last you longer. On road is lots of speed and lots and lots of money. I cant recommend anything without you going to the track and learning more about what you want. PM me if you need any help
Dont buy any engine upgrades or anything other then what comes in the kits until you know what it is you want to do. Tracks will have specific rules on what engines you can and cant run. Usually you can get by with an RTR engine for a bit until you learn how to keep it running and keep it from flaming out every three laps.
AND TOWER BLOWS ---- CHUNKS.. go to www.SpeedTechRC.com if you must purchase online

Tower's prices may be higher than some but I don't like to go around the internet shooting paypal to random places I've never heard of before. Plus they're only located about 30 miles from me so I get everything really fast.
I used to buy all my actual vehicles from ace-hobbies.com but I heard the went under or changed ownership or something.

Re: looking to get in the rc market
Don't buy any RC car from E-bay. Any time you buy a Nitro RC car used you are just inheriting the other guys problems and mistakes. And if the car ain't name brand you won't be able to buy parts. Get a Traxxas, HPI, Associated or a Losi other wise you'll be calling some guy in china to ask for parts that he doesn't understand.
