The lighter switch is a good idea, but SOOO MANY people have done it, the thieves know. The lighter switch, holding down the turn signal switch, holding the lock or unlock button, all done many many times. Not saying these are bad ideas, but against an experienced thief, they will not work. There are other options that you can use alone or in conjuction with one of the previous ideas. You can buy transponder based "kill switches" that will interupt whatever circuit they are connected to when the transponder (which is on your keychain) is not in range (only a couple of feet) of the receiver. Another one that I like is using the cigarette lighter and a pressure switch. The pressure switch is hidden under the carpet in a location that you can reach with your left hand while turning the key with your right. This switch would be connected to a starter interupt relay that is hooked up in a normally open position. When the switch is pressed and the key is turned, it allows the relay to close and the starter to activate. Adding the cigarette lighter into this woud involve using the lighter circuit to interupt the path from the pressure switch to the relay. This way, you can leave the lighter pressed in most of the time, but when you want that extra protection, you can pull the lighter out and take it with you or throw it in the glove box so that even if they happen to find the pressure switch, it still will not work.

if an experienced thief wants your car, he/she will have it no matter who you are and what you do - 99% you lose ... so do stuff for the stupid thiefs, in which case you can make a switch wherever you want and they won't find it
