he has no adult responsibilities, abilities, human contact, or life.
I think it would be mean of people to keep verbally abusing him.

When I think of Jay I imagine Taj from the movie Van Wilder, that works at the local gas station (where else?) with really angry parents that disowned him after failing to get into medical or dental school.
