Joining an existing network with a new laptop? I'm stupid
Just got a new laptop, it can find my linksys wireless and get on the internets and all that stuff. can also plug in a network cable and do the same, so I know my connections are functioning.
How do i join the network so I can see the other computers on it?
background:
I have an xp pro box with a folder that is 'mapped' as a drive to all of our other pc's, that we use as our pretend 'server' until I can afford a real one.
I need to be able to map that drive on my new lappy so I can start pulling ---- down and get this thing up to speed.
I'm running xp pro on my new laptop
cliffs: I am computer illiterate, how do i join network?

Yup use the network wizard on a computer that's already a part of the network to create a network setup disk (you can also use a jump drive) Then run that network setup disk on your new laptop and BLAMO! you're now interwebworkifyzed.

Alright, now on my old lappy, I can view the workgroup, and the new lappy is now visible on the list of computers.
I click on it and it says I don't have permission to access that, contact my administrator.
On the new lappy, I'm not real sure where to go.
-If i click on network connetions, it shows local area connection 1 & 2, wirless network connection, and 1394 connection
(clicking on any of these just gives a status window)
-If I click on my network places, all is shows is some bluetooth information exchange icon
-if I click on view workgroup computers, it waits forever, then says my workgroup is not accessible, i don't have permision etc. etc.

as long as they're in the same domain you should be able to just open up my network places and see all the shared folders on all the computers.
open up My Computer on your laptop and click map network drive.
open up My Computer on your laptop and click map network drive.
