Alright.

1) unplug power from modem/router
2) plug in power to modem, let it start up
3) plug in power to router, let it start up
4) try browser
5) go to start > run, type "cmd" in run box and click ok
6) in dos prompt type "ping www.google.com" if you get a reply, its software related (firewall, browser, windows)
7) if you don't get a reply, type "netsh winsock reset" in the dos prompt, restart the computer, and try again

Do you use zonealarm? The newest windows update will NOT work right with zonealarm, and even if everything looks fine, it won't connect.

Are you getting a forbidden message on your browser? If so, remove the proxy in internet exploder > tools > internet options > connection tab > lan settins, or check your firewalls

Try connecting the computer directly to the modem, you will need to power cycle the modem after doing this. If it works fine, then the problem is with the router.

What IP are you getting? Windows sometimes shows connected with a "169.254" IP address which is a "---- it, take this address" that windows gives when it fails.

Hardware-wise, Linksys equipment is great. The reason you have to reset their routers is because of a "bug" in their firmware. It keeps unused connections alive for a week. If you're using a p2p network, those 65535 ports get used up rather quickly and you end up with no open ports and a connection with failure.

Their new firmwares might address this problem, but I'm not sure because I switched to DD-WRT a couple years ago.

Josher was too quick, that is why i was telling you to ipconfig. i was gonna get you to ping your gateway which would have done the same thing hes trying to do.

1. Reboot router
2. Reboot windows

If you are on Linux reboot only the router

ipconfig doesn't do the same thing as ping. It will tell you what network adapters you have installed and if they have a valid ip address, along with other info, but they don't tell you if the connection to the outside world is available. Also, it doesn't tell you anything you can't get from going to network connections. All it will do is tell him the MAC (useless), IP addy/gateway/dns/etc which could be useful but network connections is already showing he's connected with an IP address...so nothing new.

I'm thinking he either has zonealarm and the new winxp updates, a firewall that has the connection locked down, or the winsock stack is corrupted.

reup. was online for 10 minutes and did the same thing again. well now at least i know it's not a problem with the cable running across the house. in the time i was online, i did an update on avg and a full system scan and came up with no viruses. i was kinda hoping it would have found something leading to the issue. what do do now?

Nah i was thinking he might not be gettin an addy so ipconfig would tell that and a gateway. I wanted him to ping a gateway, but rebooting the router was much quicker and made more sense. you beat me to it.

Pc's are funny, you can line up like 5 different techs and tell em to fix the same thing and you will see at best 4 different methods lol. I use windows hotkeys so much I can have a cmd window up with ipconfig typed quicker than gettin control panel lol.

Yeah I misread what you were saying. Pinging the gateway would let him know if he's at least connecting with the router.

I go the control panel route because I gotta work with complete morons all day every day and the sight of the command prompt scares the ---- outta them. I say: "type ping P-I-N-G, press the spacebar, and type any website, like www.google.com" They say: "where do i type it? all i see is C-colon-dash-blah blah and this blinking thing" I say: "just start typing" They say "where in internet explorer?"

------- idiots I tell ya. So many people call in bitching about "comcast service sucks" and 90% of the time it's their own problem.

Most frequent problems:
1. network cable unplugged
2. standby or internet on/off button pressed
3. reset router
4. reset modem
5. proxy left over from dsl service
6. work offline is checkmarked in explorer

Nothing like hearing someone bitch because "4 computers work on my wireless but one doesnt i'm so sick of comcast it sucks"...hello ------- retard, if comcast wasn't working you would have 0 computers online. Then, you politely try to tell them their computer is the problem...and you get "ITS NOT MY ------- COMPUTER ITS BRAND NEW I JUST BOUGHT IT THERE'S NO WAY!! IT'S COMCAST!!"

Or, you get people that call in:
Person: MY INTERNET IS OUT AGAIN I'M SO SICK OF THIS ----
Me: what message is your browser giving you?
Person: IT WON'T EVEN COME ON THE SCREEN IS BLACK
Me: Uhh...well your modem is showing connected to our network. If your screen isn't coming on I would check the power to your computer
Person: DON'T TRY AND TELL ME ITS MY COMPUTER JUST TO GET ME OFF THE PHONE
Me: uhh...really, it's your computer. The lack of internet won't cause your screen to stay black, screens have operated for years without internet
Person: WELL I'M GOING TO SWITCH TO BELLSOUTH
Me: okay, and you're going to have the same problem

Seriously, you wouldn't believe the amount of completely stupid people I hear from each day. On one hand it makes the job more entertaining, but there's only so much bitching you can listen to in a day without getting annoyed.

Fortunately, I take the "---- it" approach and do what I gotta do.

/rant

The job itself isn't bad, but the people are idiots and I don't tolerate idiots or people in general, so it's not my favorite place to be. My dream job is tucked away out of sight in my own peace and quiet doing what I gotta do.

So what's new redcav? Did you try any of the troubleshooting we suggested?
