Default Improving Gas Millage in a 96 Civic CX

We just got my mother a 96 civic CX, and she wants it to get better gas milage. Besides driving it less fast is there any way to get better mpg out of it? I was thinking of trying to get the ECU out of an HX and throwing that in there. Anyone know if that would work or have any other ideas?

Well my mother is so used to her diesels that get 45mpg that 35 mpg is bad for her.

if I'm not mistaking hondas have great gas milage even when modified, so its strange a stock civic is getting bad mileage.
sugestions: get a complete tuneup.
change and clean everything, including gas

Since when was 35 mpg bad gas mileage? Seems about right to me for a Honda.

Oh its not bad. She just wants better. And I convinced her to get this instead of another VW by telling her it would probley get around 40.

do a tune up on the car, tell her to drive it like grandma does, don't take it over 3000 rpm (but she does not have a tach in the cx, he he...lol.) and not to go over 60 mph. Then she will get the 40mpg fuel economy. 98ctr
